Raleigh Info Please

I found this on CL and its an hour and a half away.
The guy doesn't have too much info on this bike but he sent me this pic. He said this is a pic of a similar bike, he don't have a pic of the actual bike. I'm meeting with him this weekend if the size is right.
I know to trust the info from you guys and I've been looking for a bike for a while now.
I can't tell the model name form the picture.
Is this bike worth $40 and the gas to go get it.
Thanks for your knowledge
Wayne

1985 Raleigh USA Grand Prix. "555SL" main tubes - essentially Reynolds 501. Great looking bikes, and can't beat the price. Looks like the semi-blah original crankset has been swapped too.

I'd probably pay $150 for it as is, for I have the blue Super Course and white Competition (also 60cm versions, as that one you're looking at appears to be) that make up the R/W/B '84 series ('84 GP's are identical to '85's, except for the "USA" decals in red/white/blue as opposed to yellow.

I dunno, Wayne. In this day and age I'm leery of people who can't come up with a digital image of what they're selling. Figure $40, plus $30 for gas and three hours of your time.

Exactly my thoughts. I sold a bike on CL a couple years ago and I had all possible information that someone would want.
I'm already skeptical of this bike being maybe stolen or something.
He's supposed to email me this weekend and maybe he'll think that I'm asking too many questions for his liking but I really want a road bike to ride.

Whoops - didn't notice the "similar pic" comment.

Ask for a photo of the genuine article - if he don't got no digi cam, ask him to borrow the neighbor's. Alternately, ask him if he will drive it down for you to purchase, under the stipulations that it is, indeed, a 1984/5 Raleigh USA Grand Prix in absolutely comparable condition with no stuck seatpost or handlebar stem issues.

yes I really need a photo of THE bike before I drive that far for who knows what. I'm still hoping this will work out though.

Could just as well be a Raleigh Record, if described as "dark" red. These '84/5 models are anything but "dark."
