I actually voted for the orange and I agree that it's not the same as the Coppertone. I do believe you will have a great looking bike. What fork do you hope to use and do you plan to use black tape wrap & cables?

BTW, my Super Sport is sporting a Chris King "old school" BMX headset. As far as I know, only the old BMX size will fit in the '70s Schwinn frames.

My '83 Paramount is black metalic. It has a very subtle "glitter" that should really pop once I've had a chance to give it the Maguires 4 step treatment.

You've got it reversed, BMX bikes use the old Schwinn headset size. I want to use a campy 1 inch headset, that's why I had the reducing shims made.

I'm leaning toward orange. I've already got some black NOS Schwinn decals. Yes, I plan on black cables and black leather bar covers.

I've got two forks I can use. A NOS DeBernardi 1 inch threaded chrome fork, and a new unthreaded Tommasini Airfork also chrome. I think I'll use the DeBernardi since a threaded headset would look more appropriate on this frame.

If you are going to change the color....I vote LIME!

hhabca 05-28-08 11:17 AM

I say orange for the paint.

and for some advice you didn't ask for....:) ...
instead of moving the brake bridge you could use longer reach brakes, or just stick with 27 inch wheels. Good rims and tires are still available in that size.

I don't mind advice as long as it's helpful.

As for the 27 inch wheels, I have two new 700c forks(DeBernardi and Tommasini) that I can use with this frame. I don't want a bike with a 700c front wheel and a 27" rear.

I already have a pair of new Campy centaur brakes. I would consider an old school long reach Campy for the rear, but the prices are ridiculous. I've seen old Campy Record brakes sell on eBay for $200 a pair.

My only other option would be to buy some Tektro long reach brakes, use the Tektro on the rear and put a Campy sticker over the Tektro logo.

ETA: If someone has a single Campy old school long reach rear they want to sell, I'll pay a reasonable price.

I disagree. I would describe Radiant Coppertone in good condition as looking more gold colored. When it's old and oxidized it may look more brownish. I think the color you show on the truck does look something like coppertone although it's richer and deeper. I bought a '63 Schwinn Sierra out of California some years ago sight unseen. The lady selling it described it as orange colored. It turned out to be coppertone.

I voted for the orange. :thumb:

The color on the truck looks deeper because it's been clear coated, the old Schwinns were not clear coated. Here is the process for a candy paint job:

1) Primer.
2) Base coat (I'm going to use silver metalic).
3) Candy color coat (clear with candy dye added).
4) Decals.
5) Clear coat.

Leave it alone. What is wrong with the black paint?

Fissile doesn't want a black bike, and he doesn't have a matching fork. Painting it the way he likes makes a great deal of sense, especially since he is building it up with modern components, and the rear brake bridge needs to be moved. That sort of plays havoc with a paint job.

Orange, beautiful. Lime even more beautiful.

Bob,

I have excellent memories of my first serious road bike, a '71(?) Super Sport, and it was some shade of red, maybe a bit on the darker side from classic fire engine red. What color was that?

YoKev 05-28-08 06:59 PM

For what it's worth, I just purchased a set of Tektro long reach brakes... I believe the model is R556.

Anyhow, they are quite a nice item; far from the bottom of the barrel.

It's kandy, not candy and the pictures you posted are of metallic, not kandy paintjobs.

squirtdad 05-28-08 07:06 PM

lime, more cool

BobHufford 05-28-08 07:13 PM

Superiors look good in lime ...

I think it's important to figure out which color more closely matches the handlebar tape that you're going to use.

The paint manufacturer spells it "candy". Those are candy paints over a metallic basecoat. You could use other types of basecoats, such as a pearl. If you shoot candy over a metallic, it's candy. What you don't know about painting could fill an encyclopedia.

It was Burgandy, like this '71 I found at the dump last summer.

There was also an Opaque Red somewhere in the early to mid seventies.
I used to have a Super Sport in that color. I presently have a Sports Tourer in the color. I forget what year it is(too many bikes to remember all the details:rolleyes:)

That's amazing. Someone pitched a perfectly good handmade frame in the trash. I'll bet the doofus that did that has a shed full of shiny X-Mart bikes.

As of this post, it's 24 for green and 21 for orange. Actually, I'm surprised, I though it would be a landslide for orange.

I already have a bike that is dark metallic green/silver. I'm gonna go with nlerner above and paint it orange. Thanks for all the responses everyone.
