Wrights vs. Brooks Saddle

Newbie question here, but what are the major differences between older Brooks vs. Wrights saddles? I've seen Brooks saddles listed on the Bay for a decent amount of money...I haven't seen many Wrights saddles, and the ones I do are cheap (compared to a Brooks). Are Brooks of a higher quality? I thought I read somewhere that Brooks once owned Wrights...(or vice-versa?)

Just curious is all....thanks for the input...!

I don't know if Brooks actually owned Wrights at any point, but both were certainly associated with Raleigh's family of businesses. I believe SunRace actually now owns the Wrights name as part of the purchase of Sturmey-Archer, though SunRace do not make any products with the Wrights label that I know of.

As for the quality, I run several Wrights W3N saddles and have been very happy with them. YMMV. IMHO they are every bit as good as classic Brooks, but that's my opinion.

Wright saddles were Brooks' less expensive line. They came on lower end Raleighs, among others. Very similar to a Brooks but given that they were an economy model, they don't have much value today. I rode one for years without any problem, but it did eventually become an ass hatchet with a sharp ridge down the middle.

From what I can recall Wright's started out as a separate company and was purchased by Brooks along the way. I have a couple of Wrights and the quality is certainly equal to the Brooks. One I have ridden for over 30 years and it was gently used when I purchased it out of the LBS bargain bin.

Yeah, that's consistent with what I have read, too.

my current favourite saddle is a Wrights Swallow, it was produced
by Brooks, has a few minor differences in the leather (different method
of supporting the top, thinner leather) but has the same frame as brooks,
just not finished as nicely.
Overall a decent saddle if properly cared for.

The biggest general difference is the thinner lesser quality of the leather used in the Wrights to control costs. Roger

This is also not necessarily true. I have three Wrights saddles and only one of them (chrome rails) has thinner leather than a Brooks (or the other Wrights saddles that I have). I think you'll find a huge variation across both Brooks and Wrights product ranges with regard to "lesser quality", too.
