I post a thread here about selling a bike. All I get is a bunch of crap about too short or too long cables, paint on the lower headset cup, a painted seat post, painted screw caps for the water bottle, and of course, a lot of wrong things mentioned about the bike.

I had an 80's Bianchi (The name was engraved in the BB with the serial #), Campagnolo drivetrain, Stronglight crank, Mavic wheels. This seems like a nice bike to me, and obviously to the person who bought it.

Now, I did fix the brake cables length and the paint on the lower headset cup. The person rode the bike, which no one here did, and said it rode, steered, shifted beautifully.

I guess the primadonnas here are so caught up in perfection that they don't see the whole picture.

Once I said the bike was sold, you insulted the person who bought it, my city, my hockey team, why not my sister or my mother? why, because they are better than you are, they are better people than you are. they don't insult people for the kicks. They don't put people down because they are having fun.

I got into road bikes and I thought this was a great forum to get some info, you know from people who more than I do. Well, this was totally wrong. All I got was some vague information. No one here really helped in answering my questions. People here are just interested in looking at their perfect bikes and patting themselves on the back.

Sorry if we offended you. You asked about getting a specific price for your bike, and based on what we were presented, and what we have been able to sell in our markets, the answer was no - and we gave some reasons why.

I'm glad you were able to get close to your asking price.

And believe me, a lot of our bikes aren't perfect.

And that's precisely why you got the response you did. Money grubbers are everywhere. A community is a rarer thing. Try becoming part of the latter before outing yourself as one of the former.

It has been my experience that from time to time we as people find ourselves unhappy with certain behaviors of others. There are ways of feeling better besides trying to offend those who have offended you. It would have been more honorable of you to turn your cheek to the foibles you see in others, for we all have faults, even you. If you want to have peace from something (in this case these forums) you cannot gain it through requital acts of emotion. All to often people make mistakes, don't return the favor by letting your judgments of others get in the way of logic and reasoning. You have proven no one wrong with your post, you have only burnt a bridge. Burning bridges is not necessary. Good luck. Hope you come back to the forums.

The problem is clearly with you, as the folks at C&V are nothing but helpful and friendly, even when they disagree with someone.

Years ago I learned to not ask a question if there's the slightest poissibility I wouldn't like the answer.

As for the pouting and even more so for some subscribers here attempting to salve over that, baloney. Despite the oprah-ization of our society, every once in awhile a jerk comes along and people need to look him in the eye and just tell him he is a jerk.

I'm not so sure about that one Ziemas. IMO people here tend to gang up and build to a critical crescendo by the 10th post (maybe by the eighth). It all starts innocently enough, then we get one comment that has a touch of askance disdain and then Wham! Before you know it, the guy's toast.

Granted, spray canning a frame with a stuck seatpost isn't very smart, but we are not an 'easy-going' group of glad-handed buddies around here. We, the CV diaspora, present with grandiose female doggedness aplenty.

You came to a forum of enthusiasts and asked for a critique, do you want us to lie to you and tell you it looks great? Forums are fo debate and opinions. You don't paint components. If you say someone who painted their whole car including the grill, bumpers, trim side mirror and everything else that wasn't matching to begin with don't you think it would look shabby? Your bike looked shabby and you devalued it. Lucky for you the used bike market is huge.

BTW, I have seen much worse builds than that one the forum that the owner has displayed proudly and no one said Boo, but you showed up and started dollars and cents, other forums have strict rules about that kind of thing.

Nothing is harder than putting a price to a bike. When you ask "is it worth $400.00?" You are asking everyone "would you pay $400.00?" My answer is no. My answer doen't matter, because I'm not shopping in your market.

I can't figure out why you posted to begin with. Let the folks shopping for a bike in your area provide you with the only answer that matters.

+1... This is a forum populated by people who respect cycling and bikes. Though I did not get in on the original thread, you clearly outed yourself as someone who doesn’t really know or care about bicycles. While you are welcome to pursue the free market and do to your bike whatever you think will improve your competitiveness in that market, you shouldn’t expect us to provide a free appraisal. More to the point, you shouldn’t expect us to support doing things to bikes that demonstrate a lack of knowledge and or perhaps even a disrespect for bicycles in pursuit of personal gain.

W98seeng, the folks on the road forum already warned you about price fishing with your Campagnolo crankset. You should have known quite well that C&V was no exception.

That said, from reading your posting record, I think the BF fellows have been more then kind in assisting you in your project until this point. We "answered your questions" and assisted you when necessary. You, my friend, is the individual who became the primadonna.

The only thing unfortunate for you is that from what I have heard, the Bike Forums moderation team is very lenient, and even if you wanted a perma-ban, you'll be more likely to get something that will allow you to cool your heels. Tough luck for all of us!

I have not reviewed this particular thread, but you obviously got some sound advice and feedback in addition to some of the cr@p. Just accept a little tasteless bad with the good and move on.

There are four recent threads on C&V that in my humble opinion share a common vibe: They are started by people who want reassurance that the bike they own/want to sell is better than it really is, or at least worth their inflated appraisal.

I think that the OP has a point -- the criticism and "$3.50-ism" (a private joke) were a bit much -- sort of a C&V pile-on. He did get 90% of his asking price, so the opinions here, market-wise, were incorrect. I think we could all benefit from thinking twice about responding to questions that we don't like (such as "how much can I get for it") unless we can be politely constructive rather than dismissive and combative.
