Leather brake pads?

I saw a couple sets of leather brake pads at the bike shop today.

What's the the deal with these? I'm guessing they're some sort of classic/vintaged item?

They work better than standard brake pads on steel rims in the wet.

See post #2. Question answered.
According to the guys at Yellowjersey.org, they were invented by Fibrax.

They're a renewable resource. You just cut a little bit off the cow and it grows back.
Reminds me of a friend that had a pig with a wooden leg. He liked the pig so much, he didn't want to eat it all at once.
