Thanks! Believe me, if I put money into a bike with friction shifters, I'm gonna ride my money's worth out of it. Even if I completely fail at shifting gears, I'll ride it as if it's a single speed!

I changed to friction shift but still get clicking in the 2 higher gear. Older mtb with 6 speeds in rear. Can I switch to a long cage

You might have better luck posting this in the Mechanics subforum. Also, you have not described the problem very clearly, but my hunch is you need a new chain and freewheel rather than a new derailleur.
