I hate French BB's!!!

Almost hit myself in the head with a proverbial V-8 moment, when I kept trying to remove the right BB cup on my old Peugot, forgetting it too is RH threaded. DOH!!!

Now, I have to find a new spindle that will work.

I found the Sugino 3S-B at Jenson. I need to make sure it has a 55mm (+/-1mm) race width though. I think it should work.

The 121.5mm total length should work ok for my 68 BB shell. I want to install a 7s freewheel setup with a Sugino Impel triple crank.

Anyone think this is ok?

Harris sells Sugino french cups which work fine on two of my french disasters. Why do you need a new spindle by spinning the fixed cup backwards (really forwards, but it is french)? You will find that the bearing races may not line up. I ran a Campy Victory spindle into the sugino cups for a while. It 'worked', but it works much better now that I have an actual Sugino spindle. You can probably get a wide variety of sizes.

there has been a set of NOS french cups on First Flight for a long time for only $15.

Velo Orange has Edco cartridge units that look pretty nice for $78. Both cups are adjustable for dialing in the desired chainline.

I just received an edco from Velo Orange. It looks like it's going to work great with a Campagnolo triple. Those Sugino cups have been out of production for a while. They were going for as little as $16.95 on eBay about a year ago.

You may want to consider installing two adjustable cups on any bike with French or Italian BB threading -- this will enable you to fine-tune your chainline.

on my setup, i used the cups that came with the bike with an italian spindle. i think if you get sugino cups you can use the 68mm spindles.
i got my spindles from craigslist and ebay.
i also have a un72 if youre interested, you can use them with phil wood mounting rings, but my un72 is only 107mm long.

Ok,

I just bought some new Sakae BB cups. I was reading that the original cups are thin walled, and that the Japanese are thicker, so I can use a type 3 spindle with 52mm races. I may want to get a differant spindle if I can. Something under 120mm if possible.

The hard part is finding the correct spindle. I have a bunch of French cups, but I looked for a spindle for my triple for six months before I gave up and bought the Edco. They were out of stock for a long time, and I was afraid I was going to pay a whole lot more for a Phil Wood.

In a more helpful post than my previous one, you can regularly find Campangolo cup sets on Ebay and they are thick-walled cups that take a range of fairly common spindles. I have a Campagnolo NR setup on my UO-8 with Nervar double cranks.

That's the problem. Campagnolo never made a spindle for a record triple with thick-walled cups. Try and find Campy thin-walled French cups.

I guess it depends on where you live and what resources are available to you, but here in Portland I figure out what I need for spindle length, and I take the original spindle and a cheap-o digital caliper ($8 @ Harbor Freight) down to a few shops that have collections of new and used spindles. I find one in the right length using the caliper and compare shoulders to find a close match. Usually I can find a good match. Recently I had some trouble finding one long enough to fit Sugino cups with TA cranks on my Raleigh, but usually it's not a problem. If you get Campy cups and a spindle you can try that method. Hope that helps

Spendy, and will probably put you close to the Edco, but you can use Phil Wood mounting rings and a UN-72 cartridge bottom bracket.

Has anyone out there actually done the UN-72/Phil Wood rings trick on a Peugeot UO-8? I have a nearly original UO-8 I got for $7.99 plus tax. It's beautiful but it weighs 32 lbs! I was considering lightening it up with alloy rims and cranks. I have a UN-72 BB with a 113mm spindle and a Shimano 600 54-39 crank, and I was curious about potential chainline issues.

The Phil rings allow you to adjust the chainline by a few miilimeters one way or the other. If your spindle length is correct for the crank, it should work fine.

I bought the same spindle from Loosescrews a couple months ago-

According to Sheldon's site, it's 52MM for the bearing races.
It's also listed as being non symmetrical, with 1 end 5.5mm longer than the other. Mine looks more like 3mm difference, although it's a bit hard to measure those curvy surfaces.
Anyway, you can swap ends to get a 3? mm different chain line.
