Pedal Float and old looks...
I'm just messing with a new set of Campy profits and compared to my only point of reference (classic looks) they have lots of loosy-play is that pedal float? I don't remember that from my 15 year old looks. Is that new(er)? They don't disengage but they have almost a free rotation of a couple of degrees. It feels weird. They're adjusted to high tension and I'm happy with the engage/disengage but just not sure that play while engaged is normal. Any advice?

It may be normal. 'Float' is inherent to the cleats not pedals. Are you using the same cleats/shoes with both sets of pedals? If you have a specific set of cleats for each set of pedals I'd say its normal.

they're the appropriate cleats...I assumed float meant that while there was lateral play there was some tension as well...

Float seems to mean many things to many people. My modern Look pedals are as you describe, free to pivot up to 9 degrees with no tension. Many other pedals I have used that are advertised as having float do have tension, that is, the cleat will pivot but will return to center if you release the pressure of your foot. That results in the feeling that my foot is always being pushed back to a preset angle. To make matters worse, those pedals use cleats with teeth and once the teeth have made an impression in the sole of the shoe it's damned near impossible to adjust that preset position. Hence I use Look pedals on my road bikes.
Looks today that use the classic arc cleat, and I believe the old ones as well, could use either a black or red cleat. Black did not allow float, red does. Somewhere I saw gray cleats but I forget what the difference was - maybe limited float or something. From you description it sounds like your Look pedals are set up to not allow float. The Campy pedals sound normal to me.

back from 40 miles on them. I get it. On the windtrainer it was weird but on the road it's very comfy and I never pulled out of them though I did break my chain starting hard from a stoplight.
