Proof of a Track/Hipster "Bubble"?
 

I just sold a set of Sugino Maxy (Maxy, not Super Maxy) cranks on ebay for $72. They were in nice shape, but the 165 mm crank arm length seems to have done it. Is the demand for anything and everything that can be used on a fixed gear really that high? Seems ridiculous to me, or am I missing something?

Dang! I've got a few sets of cranks in 165. Maybe they should hit the 'bay real quick!

I suspect the price has more to do with their "vintagyness" than just the length, good luck getting anything close tpo that with those 165 105s. In the heat of the bidding, I have sometimes gotten carried away and spent more than I should have, like $100 for some 170 Stronglight 93s. And as for your hypothysis, I have 170s on one fixie and 175s on my Schwin n Fixie, does that disprove your proof?

From watching Ebay crank sales, my impression has been that the track types (not necessarily fixie types) favor, and pay handsomely for cranks with a BCD of 144 mm, typically 170 mm in length, especially if bearing the NJS stamp. What was the BCD on your Suginos? Dis they have a NJS stamp?

Should I try selling the 165mm long, 144mm BCD Sugino aeros off my UO-8? :) I have a Stronglight set I could swap in.

Just look at how many ads on eBay say "FIXIE", "TRACK", NJS, KEIRIN, etc.

track riders have no reason to buy shorter cranks to avoid pedal strike.

What was the BCD on your Suginos? Dis they have a NJS stamp?


I have a set of sugino maxy's, 165mm length and the bcd is 110mm

I don't have a fixed gear (I do have a NOS Miyata track frame, but it has never been built) and PBR does not stand for Pabst Blue Ribbon.

They have a 110 BCD and definitely have no NJS stamp (I don't think any of them ever did). They were polished and in good shape, though. I have an identical pair of 171 mm Maxys. I'll put them up next week and see how they do.

Whether your statement is true or not, what occurs on a track has very little to do with the phenomenon of which I speak.

I don't know about that. Local velodrome has 44degree banks and I feel more comfortable with the 165s.

While 165s aren't necessary to avoid pedal strike on a track with a track bike, they're necessary to avoid pedal strike on curbs and corners on a conversion due to the lower bb. This is all according to the armchair wisdom of bfssfg of course. If you've got em and don't need em they'll bring in more cash now than they should.

you feel more comfortable with 165s, hipsters feel more comfortable with 165s what's the difference?

I work on a college campus and one of the (rich kid) hipster students rides a Pogliaghi track bike as his commuter. In the RAIN even. It's got Super Record pista cranks. Locks it up outside, hours at a time.

These kids are crazy, more money than brains.

Good thing I don't own bolt cutters.

+1 Even with 165's on my San Jose I once had a nasty pedal strike while flying around a corner. Lifted the bike off the ground. I managed to keep the bike going, narrowly missing the far curb. Not a pleasant experience.

Yup. 165 and 144 are the magic. 151 brings money from collectors only and usually only in the campagnolo variety. Fixed kids don't want 151 because there is less ring choice. 144 is still standard and they can buy new FSA rings etc for the 144bcd cranks, so those sell well. 170 is too long, nobody wants it. You put a set of 165s on craigslist and they are gone within 24hours.

I don't wear overly tight jeans and ride at the velodrome?
