Best way to protect chrome?

I have a Raleigh team racing frame that's chrome plated under the paint. I'm stripping the paint with a citrus based stripper and am wondering if a clear coat over the actual chrome would be necessary? Also, any old Raleigh buffs out there who could tell me what Raleigh 555 steel is...that would be great.

Do a search for Raleigh 555 and you'll get more info than you could ever want. The answer is - "it depends." (For starters, what letters accompany the 555?)
My .02, I wouldn't do a clear coat. I'd clean it up good (maybe with some chrome polish or super-fine brass wool) and then wax.

#1: The chrome underneath the paint on these machines are somewhat rough. Made so in order for the paint to adhere well when new.

#2: None of the chromed machines w/555SL tubing are Team Pro frames - better known as Racing USA. Non-chrome frames with 555RSL tubing are the only variant of Team Pro to use the 555 designation (which is technically D.B. Reynolds 531.

#3: Positive identification of Raleigh 555SL has still yet to be established. T-Mar has supposed it is Reynolds 501, I suppose it is Tange 1 or 2. Good stuff nevertheless.

Eleven, will you do me a favor and scour the frameset looking for any evidence of tubing markings such as shown below once you have the paint stripped:

("531 Reynolds")

Also let me know if the steer tube has any tubing stampings.
