Old Pinarello Serials...

I just unpacked a vintage frameset and was trying to figure out what it is. It's got a columbus sticker that doesn't tell me enough and chrome forks. Any way to tell tubing apart from the butting? It's got a race number-hanger on the top tube and a nice red whit and blue fade job that makes me think it might be an old team training bike (the frame was sent from france). The levers are also drilled. Any way to reference the serial?

I think it is around 84/85. Front der. braze on and aero crown start around 83/84. Columbus decals when SL/SP were the top of the heap did not indicate if they were SL or SP. If the bike was around 58cm CTT you would assume that it was SP. When SLX, TSX etc. started to be prevalent then Columbus started indicating the tubesets on the decals. This was after the mid 80's.

The # hanger would indicate a "team" bike.

What is the serial # on your Murray? I have an 86 tdf special with the Kl top tube.

Hanger is Team bike, for sure, but I don't think that paint scheme was popular until the late 80's. Off the top of my head, I'd guess it was more like '87-'88.

vjp is much more knowledgeable than I am, his advice is never far off.

like Mark's site but I confess that Mark Bulgier gets me thinking of fantasy football...

there's no fantasy cycling, is there... I guess that's a different thread.

Here are a couple more pix. The decals are pretty different from my other pin... does that clarify anything? (I'll get serials from the Murray in a few– it's at the bottom of my "bike shed" but it's Heiden's SLX/SP crit bike... confirmed by Serotta a number of yrs ago).

I thought that it was a Tre Tubi decal from your earlier pic but it clearly isn't. However it does look like a Re-paint decal from what I can see. These decals were given to authorized shops to put on when re-finishing bikes. It is the diagonal red banner on the left corner of the decal. I am also unfamiliar with pinarello decals that are printed on one piece of clear vinyl like these. It is probably a team bike painted by the team in team colors. I will look through the few books I have with pics from that era...
