69 Schwinn Conti Cables

I need a bit of help. I picked up a very tired 69 Schwinn Conti for bad weather commuting and tinkering. I'm in the process of making some changes. Here is my questions: Can I used Jagwire cables and housing with my old Weinmann breaks and original shifters? I have been looking at Harris Cyclery here. I don't love my LBS, so taking the bike to the next best place (which is great) becomes a bit of an event, so this is something I'd just like to do at home.

Thanks.

As for the brakes, I think you want 'Campagnolo type' and not 'Shimano type'. That sorta makes sense since Campy's been the standard forever and Shimano was a non-factor in the 1960s. Got a photo of a Campagnolo lever here:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ight=cable+end . I've never had this trouble myself because have always bought the cheap 'universal' replacements.

As far as I can tell, 'Campagnolo type' has the cable coming out of the anchor axially, and 'Shimano type' has the cable coming out of the anchor radially. Are there more than two different types out there, i.e., different radii or shapes of the anchors?

Yes, you can use the Jagwire cables on both your shifters and brakes. Look at your old cables to determine which end of the cable to cut off and which end to use. Jagwire is nice that it gives both types of ends and you use the one you need.

You should also replace the cable housing at the same time. You will need about 3 feet of shifter housing and about 6 feet of brake cable housing. Measure your existing housings before ordering and give yourself some extra.

When cutting housings to custom fit your bike, tools are important. I use the specific cutters such as Park or the ones Nashbar sells. I try to always cut the housing with an old piece of cable inside in order to help keep the housing from crimping. Also, after each cut, I take the cable to the belt sander to remove the end burrs and try to make the end nice and round and flat. Again I use an extra piece of cable while sanding in order to keep the inner sleeve of the housing from closing.

Don't loose the special cable housing fittings in the top tube for the rear brake caliper and the pieces at the ends of the derailleur cable housing sections. They are hard to replace and essential to re-cabling your Continental.

Best of luck on your project. Don't forget to post some pictures.

That's great and thanks for the advice about break pads and the cutting tool. I also never would have thought about keeping old cable in the housing. I'll post pictures when I get them switched out.
