Passed by a vintage rider
I was riding yesterday up a long uphill when this guy passed me; first thing I saw was the front hub, old Normandy with the round holes and what looked like wingnuts, then black frame with polished Mafacs and a metal Simplex rear. He was wearing a tricolor wool jersey and moving past me really well, I couldn't catch him to learn more. Maybe it was just a mirage from the heat and the grade...

It wasn't a mirage...
Some folks think that because a bike is old it can't possibly be light or fast and there are many of us that like to dispel that silly notion on a regular basis.

Heck, I was riding a 24 year old bike, though next time I'll take my 48 year old bike because it has a triple crank! Those hills were long!
No, the guy was a good rider and obviously loved and cared for his machine. Wish I could've seen it in detail, no idea of make but probably from the 60s.

24 ?
That's really pretty new around here.

I don't get passed by too many folks who are riding bikes older than mine... my road bike is 35 years old and I regularly ride bikes that date as far back as the 30's.
