Another Rookie Question

So I'm definitely new to building bikes & had a quick question. I am putting together a '75 schwinn varsity & when I got it, it had no brakes . . . at all. No calipers, no cables, nada. Now I'm just about positive V-Brakes will work, My question is, are calipers more or less one size fits all, or am in for a world of hurt if I don't know the size? Any help will be much appreciated

Cheers

v-brakes will not work w/o braze on studs.

you want center-pull or side pull calipers, most likely long reach.

Scouser,

Welcome to C&V. V-Brakes will not work on a Varsity. V's need special threaded posts which are attached vie welding to the fork and rear seat stays. Unless you have a frame builder weld them on (which will ruin the paint in those areas), they will not work.

Varsitys came with caliper brakes similar to the one shown on my '62 Continental.

You could also probably equip it with center pull calipers with little trouble, which might provide better stopping power. If you would like, I could dig through my spares to see if I can come up with a suitable pair I could send you. Do you need levers? PM me if interested. Do you live in a hilly area?

Best of luck. Can you post some pictures of your Varsity?

If you look hard enough the bike industry at one time made cantilever brake adapters for BMX bikes that bolted on with one bolt and had cantilever/V brake studs on them. I used one to improve the front braking on a tandem I used to own. Roger
