I just received a Competition in about 95% condition.

Serial number B1087. If I am reading Sheldon Brown's information correctly it would be 1967. Is that correct and would it be the 1087th bike made that year?

Correct. Not the 1087th Competition, but the 1087th higher-end Raleigh built at Worksop in 1967.

Are there any records as to how many of each models were made? I'm sure that's an impossible question.

It would be nice to know though how many higher end bikes were made of any particular model in a given year though.

As far as I've seen in old catalogs, the Competition didn't appear until around 1971. Pics of yours would help.

I read the serial number wrong. It is H1087. 1973 makes more sense.

It's at the shop now getting a minor overhaul; that and a new set of Tufo Elite Ride 25s. The grease was more like cosmoline. Pictures will follow next week.

The kid at the shop was amazed I was going to ride it. I said why not, it's old like me and was meant to be ridden. He said he would hang it on a wall.

BTW, it came to me with the original Raleigh rear tire and a Clement 50 on the front still holding air. Original B17 saddle that has no wear.

I commuted to work on Thursday on my 1949 Raleigh Clubman. Definitely meant to be ridden. I don't think anyone would give it a glance in the bike rack among the largely low-end mtbs and contemporary steel fixies.
