Odd Schwinn Stem

I have an 85-86 Taiwan Schwinn World Sport that I'm doing some upgrades on. I've measured the quill stem every way possible and it appears to be 21.9mm. Can this be right? Is there anyway to stick a square peg in a round hole-that is a 22.2 stem.

The quill portion of the stem is probably 21.15mm, common for Schwinns-

No the quill is definitely 21.9. I'm familiar with the 21.15 stem that came on many opc schwinns, and i can assure this is a different size. Was there ever a French Schwinn

It's interesting that you posted this. I'm in the process of reconditioning a '65 Varsity and I just realized tonight that the 21.15 stem I bought for it does not fit. I foolishly assumed that the stem was a 21.15 -- though my researched did indicate that was correct. The 21.15 stem I got is too small. I measured the ID of the fork and it looks to be 21.9-22.0 (crappy calipers). I no longer have the stock stem.
