Simplex Derailleur replacement

Hi all, this is my first post after lurking awhile. I just started restoring a 1972 Peugeot U08 that I recently picked up. The plastic Simplex FD cracked upon reinstallation. I believe the tubes are 68mm from what Sheldon's sight says. I'm willing to use a Suntour/Shimano as a replacement. My question is what size should I be looking for and what has anyone else used in a situation like this? thanks

I have the same situation at home with a Peugeot Mixte and a U08 I picked up yesterday. I was going to use a Suntour Spirt front derailleur for both. If the clamp size fits, any FD will do.

I'll try it out tonight and let you know if it fits.

Dan

I'd definitely opt for a Suntour to replace the Simplex. Most people couldn't stand them. If I was looking to restore the bike to it's original specifications, and I was going to ride it, I'd get the Simplex and keep it in a box - while riding with something good.

Bikes: IRO Mark V, Karate Monkey half fat, Trek 620 IGH, Cannondale 26/24 MTB, Amp Research B3, and more.

I put a random Suntour on a UE-8 I had come through my hands. Worked great. Probably better than the original.

Bikes: like 15. my favorite a 1951 schwinn spitfire cruiser. also have a 1959 amf roadmaster, 1962 jch deluxe cruiser among others.

those simplex derailleurs weren't the strongest, but i have a set front and rear in clean, straight, and complete working order. PM me if anyone interested. came off my peugeot road bike.

Bikes: Seriously downsizing.

About the time that Gerry Ford pardoned Nixon I replaced the Simplex RD on the Atala with a Sun Tour V, as did hundreds of thousands of other cyclists of that time. Still on the bike and working well.

There's a site that sells the all-metal version of those Simplex RDs. They're cheap and look period-correct. I'm sure someone can find you the link.

But I'd still pick the Sun Tour.
