Any info on this bike (with pics)

Hey guys, I don't know how vintage this bike is. As a matter of fact, I don't think its very old. I got it at a flea mkt a few years back for around $50.00 if my memory serves. I seems like a pretty decent bike. It rides very well, shifts great, and seems real solid. The brand is Outland, and I can't find any info on it on the web. I think it is an inexpensive bike, but as I said its pretty nice. Shimano Altus twist shifters and derailers, Velo seat, Sovos alloy wheels (never heard of them). Sticker on bike says it was made in Taiwan. Anyway, any info on this bike or brand would be appreciated.

I am going to convert it into somewhat of a comfort bike similar to my wifes Raleigh comfort bike. Gonna put on an Avenir comfort seat, inexpensive suspension seatpost, get rid of the knobbies and throw on some road tires, ditch the flat handlebars and add some new handlebars with 2 to 3 inches of rise and some nice and soft Avenir grips.

Bikes: IRO Mark V, Karate Monkey half fat, Trek 620 IGH, Cannondale 26/24 MTB, Amp Research B3, and more.

Don't know the brand, so really can't say. But a couple of observations:

-4130 (Cromoly) frame. So, it is at least a real bike, likely not mere Xmart crap.
-Forged rear dropouts. Again, points to reasonable quality.
-(I think) aluminum rims. Again, reasonable.
-Low-end components (stem, crank, derailleurs). So, it was not this brand's expensive model.

Age: hard to say. Threaded headset, horizontal rear drops, canti brakes all point to at least the 90's. The over-sized motorcycle type brake levers might even suggest 80's. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Judging from the wear on the cog teeth, this bike was ridden. Actually, that is a good sign. Crappy bikes get hung in the garage after a few weeks. But, it does not appear to be worn out or even abused.

I think it is in good shape, and reasonable quality. Depending on what you want to do with it, I think it would be worth cleaning up, lubing, and getting out there on it.

'Looks allot like a Diamondback or a Giant. I've owned mid range models of both, back in the day. The seat clamp looks DB, but the frame geometry looks Giant. The clearance dent for the chain-wheel looks like both. Weinman wheels?

The wheel hubs say Sovos. Thats the only markings I can find on the wheels. Not sure about the seat post. It certainly doesn't ride like an xmart bike. Rides very good. I'm gonna turn it into a comfort bike like my wifes Raleigh.

Bikes: I used to have many. And I Will again.

comparing Altus components to my Trek 700 hybrid, I'd say 1998 era.
BTW, those don't look like forged dropouts at the back, look more like stamped.

Those drops are forged, without a doubt. Note the raised lip surrounding the cut-out.

They are most likely stamped and pressed, the pressing gives them the lip you are talking about. I have a couple older bikes like this.

That is two votes for stamped then? I don't mean to sound dogmatic, but are you sure? I have always thought that that thick raised lip was diagnostic of forged drops.

Bikes: Seriously downsizing.

Three for stamped. The stock is too thin, and the eyelets aren't threaded.

4-1. I lose.

Sorry to have completely hijacked this thread, but maybe I can be set straight once and for all. On this stamped dropout, is what I have previously called the "raised lip" thicker than the rest, or is it merely offset outward?

If it were Cro-Moly, it would be thicker, like the Diamondback and Giant I mentioned earlier. But just a guess. 'Looks to me like a mid grade Giant, like a first gen Rincon.

Look closely at the base of the seat tube. From one angle you can make out a "41..." and from the other angle you can read "...30". So, at the risk of going even farther out on the fool-limb, I am pretty sure it is 4130 Cromoly.
