Buying a New Bike is it worth selling my Trek 950?

I'm new to the board and noticed through searching that my bike is considered vintage. Sort of makes me feel really old. I'm going to be getting a Trek 6000. I rented it at Hardwood Hills in Orillia Ontario. The Bike is awesome. I still have my original Trek 950 as well. I love the bike but it just doesn't feel as nimble as the 6000. My question is does it pay to hang onto it as a spare bike or try and sell it. The bike is all original (plus some scratches). I just can't see giving it away and I doubt it's worth much. Any opinions?

Read this thread first - it's about bikes that people regret getting rid of - after you read, keep your 950.

You also need to learn the #1 rule of the C&V forum, N+1
Where N= the number of bikes you have.
And N+1= the number of bikes you need

1. Remember N+1

2. I am a little biased as I currently have two Trek 950s. Just finished a road/path tour on the 950, worked great.

This may be a bit of a varied thought on the forums, but here it goes:

What good is a bike that sits and never gets ridden or only gets ridden once or twice a year?

Different types of bikes for different riding purposes is a different matter; i.e. a mountain bike, a tourer, a racing bike, etc.

I am not familiar with the Trek 950 or 6000, but if they are the same style of bike, I would get the 6000 and after half a year or more, if the 950 doesn't get ridden, pass it on to someone who can use a bike.

Heh, heh, there's a saying where I used to live:
"Ya'll not from around here, are ya"

Seriously, part of the C&V thing is appreciation of the machinery and riding an older bike on occaision just for fun. I admit I've practiced the N+1 rule to an extreme, but I have taken at least 12 different bikes on rides so far this season and I'll probably add two or three more before the end of the year.
OK, I'm an extreme and I really enjoy bikes. I don't knock an individual who wants only one bike. Space, financial restraints or just a desire to only own one bike is fine. But if someone asks if they should sell their old bike, they're actually almost at the point where they want to keep an extra bike for many possible reasons. Having sold a couple of bikes I wish I kept, I'd recommend keeping the old bike and I've certainly kept more nice bikes than I've sold and have no regret, actually it's quite satisfying.

That's cool Rocco, and I certainly understand where you're coming from... I'm just of a different mindset (not from around there ). I do have two bikes and am working on a third. I have a Miyata and a '96 Giant mountain bike. I'll never get rid of the Giant, it has great memories for me.

Why not sell the Miyata? You haven't said much about it. You seem to like both the Giant and Trek. And depending on what model Miyata it is, you might fetch a decent return off of it.

No, no, no - you have it all wrong.

n = the number of bikes you have
g = the number of bikes you particularly enjoy riding
b = the number of bikes you flip
w = the number of individual bicycles you lust over

g(n² + 1) + w(b • 2) = the number of bikes you need.

1990's 950 mtn bike or 1981 950 road bike?

I'm assuming the MB here, but just wanted to make sure.

Kurt, Are you sure about that equation?
I need 25,524 bikes? I might need to apply for some of that recovery money. Not to mention, anything over 10,000 bikes, the wife is REALLY gonna complain.

What do I do if S=0? At S=0, it is undefined, but as S approaches 0 the number stretches out to infinity. Damn, I have to get buying.

Exactly what I was wondering.

There was also an earlier 950 MTB with a lugged 531 frame and a level top tube. I'd want one if I had any desire for a mountain bike.

Interestingly (and I speak from recent--this morning recent--experience) as S realizes n and/or w, S approaches 0...very quickly.

Which, if I read it right, means that my compulsion actually increases the more I get found out.

This is a troubling revelation.

wow very interesting reading. Thanks for all the responses. This is my first bike site. I'm used to Mustang and Jeep sites,
This is by far more interesting. My Trek 950 is a 1989/1990 Single track Mtn Bike Dark Purple with white accents. The bike is all stock and I do enjoy riding it, so as someone on this thread stated, I'm not really interested in selling just wondering what I would do with 2 bikes. I still love riding the bike, it's easy to maintain. I think it's more wanting the front suspension and lighter overall bike. I just recently picked up a bike for my son full suspension no name brand. He's only 9 and wanted what all his friends wanted so the bike is more look what I got at that age. Mind you I spent the better part of the day re-adjusting the brakes and gears. Nothing seemed to work. Long story short that purchase and my test ride on the 6000 made my inside self say get it. From what I have read from you all I think I'll be keeping the 950 and cleaning it up, it does have good memories attached to it.
I do have one question though. I did try to find my bike on the web but there were no photo's of a dark purple Trek 950. I purchased the bike 1989/1990 time frame it was brand new. How many colour choices were there? Was my colour not popular? I have to admit I thought it was black when I bought it. Anyway thanks again for all the feedback. I look forward to checking this site out more often.
