Which Pedals

Hey, sorry I probably posted this in the wrong section so sorry if I am.

I am looking for pedals for my Schwinn Collegiate 3; I was told I need 1/2" threaded pedals but on top of that I wanted lightweight ones made out of something besides plastic and they need to have toeclips or be toeclip compatible. Does anyone have any suggstions? Thank you

toeclips on a Collegiate? You are breaking new ground...I think most metal pedals you'll find with 1/2" threads are going to be BMX style: fat platforms with grip pins, but many of those have mounting holes that should allow fitting toeclips and straps. There's hundreds of them, just do a search at one of the big online shops like AEBike.com (good news is that there are plenty of cheap choices as well as some really $$$ ones).

I can help you out. They won't be perfect pedals or toe clips, and you might need to find new straps. But any rat trap pedal that came on a Varsity, Continental, or Super Sport, can have toe clips mounted and used. PM me and we'll work out the details.

Lyotard, the big French pedal manufacturer made quite a few pedals suited to Schwinn 1/2" cranks and toeclips into the 1980s. They are usually pretty basic "rat trap" style steel pedals, but generally have serviceable bearings under a removable dust cover.

However, I would look on eBay for "MKS" (Mikashima) BMX pedals. They look like basic Road quill pedals and came in a variety of anodized colors and indeed have 1/2" axles. Very nice quality.

Some of the New Old Stock pedals listed at $50 in the US are really excessively priced, but these are definitely out there - check out the International Seller listings:

Here is one set in England:

A good photo from a UK seller who seems to have a good selection in stock for 1/2":

Or, better still, right here in the US...

Here is a copy made by "Victor" from the 1980s...

Buy it now price = $18.95 plus $7.75 shipping... hard to beat that!

Wow, very helpful replies. I dont want to be stuck with cheesey PVC pedals, I wanted something quality that were 1/2 but it was hard to find cheap ones that accept toe clips and it was more challenging considering i am a newby. Thank you very much for your replies, very helpful!

Can those use the ordinary vinyl/leather toeclips or just the metal ones? Thank you!

The metal ones that screw onto those holes I would guess.
Don't know for sure - I don't use toe clips.
Chuck Taylor's are my riding shoe of choice - the sneaker's rubber-toe would get stuck in a pedal toeclip.
And my feet like freedom.
