Mid 80's Cilo Bottom Braket Question

Going to convert my Cilo to Fixed gear and may need to replace the BB. If so, anyone know if these are English or French threaded?

Also, is there an elegant way to cap off the down-tube shifters with something?

Thanks. This is about 10 years older than mine so I have to wonder if they changed anything. Maybe someone knows.

The one I sold SHOULD have actually had a Swiss bottom bracket in it, but for some reason it was French. Does it have a bottom bracket in it currently? If it does check to see if there are any threading marks on the cups, 1.37x24 is english, 35x1 is French or Swiss. French and Swiss use the same threading but the fixed cup (drive side) on Swiss is opposite threading like English (i.e. not lefty loosy righty tighty).

That's Italian threading. Also shell is 70mm wide contrary to others (68mm).

Yes, it is 70mm wide. Thanks, mystery solved. Now to see what I can get to fit it.

The one I had, mid '80's, had a DA bottom bracket. I can call the present owner and get numbers off of it if needed. I think he's doing a century with me on Saturday. Maybe a metric century, depending on Friday night.

Now a Swiss bike with an Italian BB, this is a weird world we live in! I guess that officially means if it's Swiss it can be *anything*. As for an elegant way to cap off the shifter bosses: I used 2 pvc caps (hardware store), punched a hole thru the tops and secured with SS button-head bolts. It's not all that pretty but better than chopping them off.

I've used down tube stops. Take the barrel out and turn them backwards for a more aero appearance

Well, they're neighbors. I guess if the Swiss can get Columbus tubing, they could thread it Italian.
I've never seen a Cilo with Campy, though, it's all been Japanese to date. I've only seen 4.

It might not have been Italian threaded to begin with. Quoting Sheldon:

"Sometimes, bicycles which have damaged bottom-bracket threads are machined out to Italian size to eliminate the damaged threads."

Then how do you explain the 36X24T marking and the 70mm wide BB shell?

You're right, the 70mm bb shell would indicate it's always been Italian. As for the marking, I take it that's on the bb cups. What I was saying was that the shell might have been tapped to the larger Italian size if there was a problem with the original threads, and an Italian bb put in. But since the shell is 70mm wide, probably not.
