is this guy nuts?

https://cgi.ebay.com/TREK-420-Touring...QQcmdZViewItem is this bike worth that much or is he out of his mind? I paid 10 dollars for the exact bike with beat tires and no rust, mine needs a tuneup and servicing, but still....

If it was clean and straight, I would say his price is OK. Given condition (poor), he should start at $50 or less.

As far as finding a clean one for $10, congratulations. Bike should be worth $150 to $200 in ready to ride clean condition.

Well, I've seen that saddle sell for $50 on Ebay, so if you factor that out, it's not quite so bad, but it's still a high starting price.

It's a pretty nice bike. You got a steal for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if an auction for one ended for 200 or 250, but by starting it at 200 the seller might scare everyone away.

I don't think he'll get the open.
That plus shipping appears high.

I'd pay $50-$75 locally, use the seat elsewhere, tinker on the frame.

There is one of those saddles on eBay currently. $65 BIN. https://cgi.ebay.com/NIB-Selle-San-Ma...QQcmdZViewItem

I figure $50 tops for the bike and $65 for the saddle means $100 for that bike as is. Tops.

If you really have to have that saddle. I don't.

The Simplex RD is worth around $70 by itself, the seat around $40 really, the frame around $115. The price is fine an I'll bet a fiver that he gets it.

All you need is 40 people to take your bet and you can snipe the bike.

Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.
So far, it's not worth it.

In my area you couldn't sell that bike for near that money without at least cleaning it up.

I guess I should have mentioned the 'cleaning it up' part!!!!!.....I just sold a Trek 500 very similar to that, same color, goofy yellow cables etc.....for $275.

Would someone please explain to me how this bike could have 2 bids but a current price that's the same as the opening price?

Thanks,
Danny

Yes, he put in the first bid and then a second, probably because he wanted to make sure that he was not out bid later.

I had a shorter frame 48cm, 420, nicer condition than the listing, newer with index shifting, sold in the Raleigh area for $150 in about 1 hour, my email was lined up with buyers. Should have asked $200 or $250, but a very nice hard core roadie got it who appreciates the ride that old steel framed bike provides, that's worth a lot to me.
I think the ebay listing is correct, but the seller should have cleaned up the bike. His price is more in line than the extremely lucky Skywriter who got one for $10.
Those old steel Trek bikes are sought after.

This just proves to me what I steal I got when I picked up an 89 Trek 660 frame and fork for $50.
