If you don't wanna dip your hands in the project I'd be happy to buy the project from ya if you wanna give me a deal, you can keep the crankset even!

lipripper 11-19-08 02:22 PM

I need to think about it a bit--
for sure would not need the crank---

merlin55 11-19-08 03:13 PM

any old car wax, the kind that also has cleaner, has a very mild abrasive that will polish off the haze on clear plastic.

jet sanchEz 11-19-08 03:21 PM

The crank will net you a couple of hundred on eBay for sure, perhaps more. Take some very good photos and put a "Buy It Now" price of $300 and it will probably get picked up pretty quick...or can some members think of a better price? Maybe it is worth more?

lipripper 11-19-08 03:42 PM

300 bucks???
would that include the peddles also???
or can I get another 300 for them--:)

anomaly 11-19-08 03:55 PM

I have pantographed (the name for the named engraving on the cranks) Colnago cranks and they won't bring you $300, but you should get 1-2.

lipripper 11-19-08 04:03 PM

is yours the same as the one I have?

anomaly 11-19-08 04:05 PM

No, slightly different. I guess it's possible they would bring $300 but I wouldn't count on it. I would think $175-250 or so. If they were NOS, or cleaned up perfectly, it might be higher.

banjo_mole 11-19-08 04:07 PM

Better than pawn those beautiful cranks and historic frame to some ebay parts hound, I'm sure someone here in C&V would buy and restore that bike for you, (I certainly would!) or even simply get it working..

Seems like it'd've been a top-of-the-line bike in its time, or at least a pioneer.

How you manage to score awesome stuff like that for free, beats me.
I need to find some old people now.

cudak888 11-19-08 04:16 PM

I'd love to take those cranks off your hands, but I don't have a Colnago to help me excuse myself of the expense ;)

Incidentally, that is one hell of a large outer ring - looks like a 54 or 55t.

bmaxwell 11-19-08 04:19 PM

that is an amazing bike, I would keep it and get it all restored perhaps one of your family members will get into to the bike scene and appreciate it. You could give it to one of you kids to love. that is if they are into it.

I agree that perhaps the best place for it is to one of the C&V folks who are totally into these bikes.

lotek 11-19-08 04:26 PM

the only thing that I get offered for free are rusty murray and huffy pseudo mountain bikes.

Thanks, I was just going on memory of what I saw of late...some Pinarello ones went for $300 in August thought they may be rarer than Colnago ones.

lipripper 11-19-08 04:58 PM

I sure do not want to brake any rules--here--as far as selling--
I am not sure what to do with this thing--
only one kid and he would not be into it at all--

I am going to clean it up over the next day or so--
and repost some pic's--
should I remove everything from the frame********** including the crank, seat and hardware???
as far as getting it for free--
I am lucky that I even rememberd I got it--it was 1976 u know---anybody that lived in thoes days will understand----:)--:)
I will be offline until early am tomorrow--

Chris_in_Miami 11-19-08 05:06 PM

You've said that you're not a "bike person," so I'd suggest leaving all the parts on and cleaning it as best you can. Some of the parts can get damaged pretty easily without the proper tools.

lipripper 11-19-08 05:14 PM

-------what to do---------
I am up for dumping this thing--
I may set up a web site and call it "bikeBAY.com"--hummmm---may work--
sounds like a fun bunch of guys---but---
way too much golf to get into another hobby---

lipripper 11-19-08 05:21 PM

can I post my email address???

lipripper 11-19-08 05:29 PM

what is it worth??

cudak888 11-19-08 05:34 PM

I don't know about removing the parts - I'd pretty much sell it as is if I were you, but I'd remove the crankset (heck, it's nice enough to hang on the wall ;) ). The crankset doesn't go with the bike, and just the same, you'll have to remove it and pack it seperately to prevent shipping damage.

Only detriment to this is that you'll need two special tools: #1: Thin-wall 15mm socket to get the fixing bolt out (and if you're lucky, it might have 14mm sockets, in which case you won't need the thin-wall 15), and a Park CCP-2 crankset removal tool. You must make sure the washer that goes with the bolt comes out (and if not, fish it out), then thread the crankset removal tool into the extractor, being quite careful not to cross-thread it. Also make sure it goes down into the crankset as much as possible without undue force (finger-tight isn't good enough). Carefully spin the extractor at this point, and let it push the crankset off the taper.

Its worth whatever someones willing to pay for it. Vintage carbon fibre doesnt always fetch much, especially the bonded variety, and these ones were known to fail as you've probably read; people aren't willing to spend much on something that may break on them, unless they just wanna buy it to hang it up.

That said I am interested in it if you want it gone, I just wouldnt spend a lot on it. send me a private message if you want to unload it for a fair price though, I'd love to get it back on the road and ride it.

...and if you get it with that crankset, let me know what it would take in trade to get it off your hands ;)

You sold that freaking Bianchi I liked so much...
And THAT was a nice bike...
(Picking, though I really did like that bike)

bmaxwell 11-19-08 08:24 PM

Gene, yes it was a very nice bike, but it was just way too big for me the frame I have now is about 4 or 5 inches smaller and it is just right. I mean really was sposed to keep the silly thing sitting in my dining room forever not being ridden? so now I have another smaller bike sitting there and it gets ridden... and will get more riding time as the days get longer again.

PBR Streetgang 11-19-08 09:46 PM

I've always liked these bikes, but if you are not into bikes, it's probably not a good idea to restore it. This is more of a collector's item. The history of early carbon in general and this bike in particular suggest that they are not reliable riders. Great piece of history, though. I remember seeing one on ebay with a full Campy NR group and I believe it went for $600, but I'm not sure I remember correctly. In any event, it's probably best to sell it, but you should sell the cranks separately. Have a bike shop remove them. If you damage them, it will destroy the value. Good luck.
