It was friggin' warm here yesterday! We were happy as could be after the frigid temps of the last few weeks. I wasn't going to turn down a certain someone who wanted to tag along.

I just got home from a 42 mile ride in Scituate and Foster. My first ride in two weeks. It's 54 degrees right now! Salty and sandy, but very comfortable on the Gitane.

I was out and about this morning too JJS. The weather gods are smiling on us today. I took my newest acquisition, 89 Fuji Saratoga out for it's initial ride. I really like this bike, it's going to get a lot of use. I went to the boat ramp on Beach Pond in Voluntown and walked out on the ice. It was a little wet, but solid. Plenty of guys were ice fishing in shirtsleeves.



I only went about 25 miles today, I've got to drive to Warwick in a little while for some chicken wings for the game. Felt good to be out, I saw a lot of people out walking, but only one other bike rider. From what I hear, we are getting another blast of cold and snow midweek.

We still have more snow than you guys in the small states, and more than New Jersey and Loo'vul too.

We did our first tandem ride of the year, 25.35 miles, max speed 27.9mph, avg spd 12.0mph. Kind of a slow day, I guess. Temps around 49degF according to the car thermometer, but with a pleasant sun filtering down through the slightly cloudy sky. Had to thread our way around snow/ice patches and shoulders on some of the smaller roads.

I guess the beavers haven't come out yet. Do they hibernate, I wonder?

During lunch the sky turned cloudy. Normally we'd continue north even on a short day, but it didn't seem wise at that time. I told Sharon I was going to take us back to the car. She didn't complain! Usually she always wants to go further! We mounted the bike and before we'd gotten to the end of the parking lot the temperature had fallen 5 degrees and it had started raining lightly. Halfway back to Bedford the rain let up and the temperature climbed again so the ride back to the car was nice. We loaded the bike into the Caravan, and before we'd gotten a mile down the road it was raining steadily! Good timing, ya' think?

A good way to start the year!

One of the negatives about the west coast and the Super Bowl start time in the mid-afternoon is there's not enough time to ride with other Sunday obligations. Great photos everyone but now it's time for all things Seahawks including my C&V Steve Largent Seahawk jersey.

Uh, yeah, uh they have really good chicken wings, yeah, that's it! I get wings from Hooters every year for the super bowl, have been for years. Pretty full right now, and Seattle just ran back the kickoff. Unbelievable! 29-0!

They were in the trailer, but I promise she didn't need them. Good thing, because she wouldn't have kept them on without duct tape. I't was warm, but windy. I was disappointed in how many of the little kids on that bridge were wearing hats, however.

Thanks guys, it was incredibly beautiful yesterday when the sun came out after the fresh snowfall. I was actually thinking while riding that it was one of the prettiest bike rides I'd ever been been on.

ColonelJloyd - That's awesome that your spending time with your daughter. My son is almost a year old and should be ready to go for some trailer rides soon. I'm looking forward to the time when he can do more outdoor things with me. I do find that when you have children many people will have an opinion about how they should be taken care of (no offense meant to spacemanz, I'm sure he/she was teasing). One of several examples: One day there was a lady in a shopping center screaming accross the parking lot "Put a coat on the baby" multiple times, I realized that since I had the only baby around she must have been screaming at me. I made sure I didn't give her the satisfaction of looking at her and acknowledging that I'd heard her. What she didn't realize is that nobody loves my son more than my wife and I do and he is very well taken care of, she also did not realize that he had another fleece layer on under the thick outer one that she could see. Plus seriously, it's not like the child is going to freeze to death between the store and the warm car, it wasn't all that cold.

It wasn't bad on the way up, the first half of the ride, but it was a little cold on the way down. My commute this morning was colder though, about 14 degrees when I left my house. The main thing that gets cold is my toes.

It was pretty overcast all day, but I'm definitely glad we decided to get out. Not going to get too many more chances to ride with her like this, she's growing so fast. I think i need to start looking for a nice junior road bike for her .

Ah, Salsa El Mariachi....what a sweet ride! I had the pleasure to update one for an energetic 70 y.o. man who wanted it streetable to ride with his wife. I plan to have an El Mariachi in my herd in the future.

Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun. I've always regretted not taking a mtb onto the Charles River when I was still in Boston. There are some videos of a couple guys sneaking onto it one morning and had a hell of a good time. The view from the middle of the river was worth the risk. There was even a guy walking his dog out there in the video.

As for my impression of the Vee Rubber Flying Vs: Very confident tire, great traction for a CX tread, and the 120 tpi casing is tough and absorbs harshness very well. No surprise given the designer is from Kenda. If you like the Small-Block 8's, then their offerings will be almost the same. I pushed the Flying Vs beyond their intended use during difficult single track. Lost traction in the loose stuff during steep climbing. But managed to hold their line in drops, bounced off rocks w/o damage at 35 psi. Even pulled a 1/2" thorn out of the front tire yesterday and it didn't flat. Lucky. They are great grinding through the rocky canal trails. Little effort. But a bit noisy and resistant on pavement.
Only negative is the loud and large sidewall 'advertisement'. A more low key sidewall would be nice.
I have another pair in 29x1.75 for a true Monstercross class build next.

One thing I've learned, get the best tires you can afford. They transform your bikes' performance.

And it's great to see the Big Chill has broke and many have gotten to go out and ride.
Love all the frozen over rivers, lakes, etc. Great pics.

That Rockhopper should be a great street bike. Basically identical Tange frame as my Hardrock Cruz that I tried as a drop bar. It handled great on pavement.

Thanks guys, it was a pretty decent ride when things were level. We encountered a couple of climbs that made the front wheel lift a little, I just hunched forward though and it was okay. But that is a good excuse... err reason to get a front rack and even out the load. And the new scwable kojaks are pretty awesome feeling, even with my daughter on the back, rolling and handling felt pretty nimble.

I am currently in Gulf Shores AL. and it is so flat it's ridiculous, I am used to hills where I have to work a little and get rewarded with a nice downhill coast. Here it is peddle, peddle, peddle! Give me a hill!
I am going to try to maintain my 20 mile a day average.
