The wind was howling today so I went on an adventure with the Klein Pulse II mtb. Decided to take an old Jeep trail on the east side of the canyon I ride a lot. It included a lot of obstacles, some hike a bike, a creek crossing, a hill climb on foot some mud and a heck of a lot of fun. Probably around 17.5 to 18 miles in total but took 2.5 hrs thanks to the climbing, hiking and all around time spent enjoying the quiet scenery. My neighbor told me later that there is a suspected wolf pack where I was riding. The Walther may need to go with me next time. Either that or the .41 mag - it might be too heavy, though.

After some climbing and heavy sweating I came into a series of three sweet meadows. A couple of years ago I spooked a 6 point bull elk in here.

The rest of the old Jeep trail had a nice wide game trail for easy riding but a lot of fallen down trees that required dismounting. Still worth it, though.

I think it runs from 2000 ft above sea level at my house to 6800 feet at the highest peak behind us. My goal is to climb to that peak this year as Ramrod prep. Today probably saw me go to about 3300 or so according to the topo maps

Yes, search 'how to adjust derailleur'. But, I just took a bike to a bike shop and the owner, with 34 years experience, did an amazing job- transformed the bike-- for a few bucks.

I rode 50 miles this morning. It was cold and damp,around 45 degrees, but starting to dry out. Mostly out in Scituate and Glocester.

I saw this cool old greek revival house in Harmony RI.





Definitely a fixer upper. Built in 1851 by either Cyrus Farnum or his son Charles Farnum. On a nice chunk of land, but right on a busy road. You ever notice that old houses are often located right up to the curb on roads?

I saw two deer run into the side of a pickup on the way out in Scituate. They both got up and ran away after. I stopped to ask the driver if he was ok. He had a smashed windshield and a big dent in the side of his truck. He was not happy. There was no way he could avoid them; he slowed down and honked his horn but they still ran right into him. Kind of a disturbing episode.

After yesterday's CCRT ride in the rain, our band had to play a church service this morning so Iam running low on sleep. (That seems to be my normal mode of operation these days.) Nevertheless I did get out for about 30 miles this afternoon on this new old thing.

My parents live very close to skyline drive. I'd like to check it out when I'm visiting, in July. I only ride hills once a year, while there. I wonder if I could do it. Not likely, with 12% grades.

28th Annual Fiesta Biathlon, which 2 friends and I founded in 1986. I no longer do the entire thing (run/ride/drink). One friend has just beaten, we hope, testicular cancer, thanks to preventive measures and protocol aided by the Livestrong Foundation. Anyway, after the 1st Fiesta, he and I went to the local bike shop to get our own new Centurion Dave Scott ironman bikes. He paid his $698 and got $25 credit to turn in the 600EX pedals for some Looks. I had sticker shock and bought a Trek 510.

Two years ago, at a triathlon on the Pamlico Sound, he showed up by boat, gave me the old, decrepit Ironman-shaped object. His wife said "lose it, or put it in the landfill; it's been in sheds/garages/in the way for 25 years." I did a little rehab, all cleaning. An NOS saddle helped, new cables and housing. We are ECU graduates, colors are purple and gold, and just this week, I came across the perfect tires. It came together fairly well.

After 28 years, we realized we'd never done the team event together, so he ran and I rode, but I racked his bike, and the bike shop owner was there, so we got some pics with her after the event. Oh, by the way, those slow steel bikes? 15.0 miles, 42:58.

I got out for a couple of rides this weekend. Saturday I got out for a long ride. I tagged along with a fast group for the first half, and then peeled off on my own for awhile.





I blew out the casing on the back tire about 8 miles from home, so my wife came and rescued me.



Tonight I had some time to kill while my daughter was in Youth Group. I should've known better and brought a fendered bike and rain gear. The weather looked 'ok' when I left, with clouds and some blue sky. Ten miles into the ride it changed to thunderstorms and downpour. I took cover under a bridge for about twenty minutes waiting for it to blow over..



I caught a break in the weather and headed back to Snohomish, only to have the sky open up again two minutes later. It was a pretty miserable cold wet ride back. The rain stopped a couple miles before town.

Thanks, otg. Not a BL, a 1st gen Cyclone. A blue RD would have been a nice stylistic touch though. The only stylistic choices I made on this bike were the blue bar tape and cable housing, the French crankset, and the Weinmann Carrera brakes (which were actually spec'ed in the catalogs for one of the years).

The front is a Vx. For some reason the Cyclone I intended to use was loose on the ST. Maybe the clamp was deformed. The Vx isn't quite as pretty but is about the same weight (which is insignificant anyway) and works flawlessly.

At the turnaround point I fell in conversation with a woman who said she was going to ride the 5-Boroughs ride next weekend. I asked if she'd ride the urban bike she was on. She said it was the only bike she owned but she'd really like a nice road bike. Then she complimented the Moto and said it looked fast. It was a nice experience on a cold & damp day. (With about 20min to go on my return it started raining. I enjoyed the ride anyway!)

So, I got out today for a 38 miler on the Trek 660. Weather was good when I left, got cloudy and a bit chilly during the ride, and now I'm sitting in my kitchen and the sun is back out again. I only took a couple of pictures today. This one is on Rt. 49 in CT looking at the hills to the north.


This was at a campground in Griswold CT. There was nobody there, but I found a fire still smoldering in one of the fire pits.

Went a little south of where I live to the Irvine area. They have a much better trail system that I've been meaning to explore. Definitely glad that I did... and so much more to explore according to google's bike map.
