Warm and windy, ice is melting

@ascherer, @Vonruden, great pics as usual! Good day to ride.
Well, it was a good day here too. Last week we did our first tandem ride of the year, today I did my first short solo ride, a quick, chilly 20 miles out to Lexington and back. It was also the first ride on the Tommasini since switching the shifting over from 8-speed indexing to friction. It's a different beast, shifting 8 speeds with friction. But the sprockets' tooth counts are so close together it doesn't matter if you overshift occasionally. They're all good. It was also the first ride with the newly bejeweled brake calipers. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...keAndBench.jpg http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...ikeAndPole.jpg http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...ikeAndSign.jpg http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...8/BobbyMac.jpg |
Thanks, @jimmuller. About 7 years back, when we were first courting, my wife lived with her kids in Sudbury. I loved riding in that area, although I never did the trail.

@Vonruden, @ascherer, and @jimmuller, thanks for the excellent photography. It looks like the East Coast has recovered from that "Bomb Cyclone" thing. Why can't they just call it a blizzard?
We got hit with 12-18 inches of the white stuff last week, but they have the trails cleared now and I was able to get down to Hastings this morning. https://i.imgur.com/ZpYI0GM.png The Barracuda is showing a bit of rust on the drivetrain already, I'm going to have to tend to that soon. I paid a visit to the Dragonfly sculpture, which looks like it has a broken wing that is being held up with a wooden splint. https://i.imgur.com/VQv9rex.png It's amazing how quickly the ice and snow melt off of any place that is exposed to the sun all day. The dike trail was completely clear. https://i.imgur.com/8msgJm4.png Who needs a kickstand when you have this? https://i.imgur.com/Y07hJ3K.png I ended my ride at El Mexican, my favorite brunch spot in the old part of town. A little tropical interlude... https://i.imgur.com/5TzQlDe.png The Chilaquiles was delicious! Sorry, no photo this time. :( |
Very handsome bag @jimmuller! It complements the Tommasini very nicely. Who made it? Is it attached with one of the old Cannondale-style coathangers that wrap around the bars and stem?

Out for a short one on the Olympic Discovery Trail on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. The sun was out but there was a helluva' wind blowing....gale force in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Pic below is where the trail crosses the Elwha River. I was ridding a single speed.

Gosh, does the MM have mile markers that match the color of your other bikes and HB bags too?

Thanks. That is a Dill Pickle bag, made by famous randonneuse Emily Obrien (who happens to live in the Boston area, and who rides Raleigh Pro ( I think it is) fixed-gear). I think the website is dillpicklegear.com. They aren't cheap but they are very very very well-made and designed. It has straps that go around the bar but the main support is by loops over the brake hoods. I hate metal bag supports, which is why I like this one so much. I have one on many of my bikes.
You should send her the picture for her site. It certainly makes for a great example of her work. time to start saving my money. |

It was called a bomb cyclone because it was a strange and special kind of blizzard. It's where you lose 24 millibars or more in 24 hours, which is an unusually large drop. |
I have enormous respect for you folks with actual winters to endure. That white stuff is beautiful, but to actually have to drive through/ride through/shovel/bundle up against it... no thanks. I need my sun!
The weather here is back to "what winter?" mode, so I donned my shorts and fluorescent t-shirt and took my Fuji on a 32-mile ride north this morning. https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Fuji...1%20146-XL.jpg I rode north along the greenbelt, which is an 11-mile-long string of parks and golf courses in Scottsdale. I've heard about the recent explosion of dockless bike rentals, but this was my first time seeing it first-hand. I like the idea, in general, but some people don't understand that some places are not okay to leave a bike. Also, do we really need so many? There were hundreds of these things in just a few miles, and I didn't see a single person actually using one. https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Bike...-1%20149-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Bike...-1%20150-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Bike...1%20152-XL.jpg Anyway, I got a copper Crane bell for Christmas, and I put it to good use today. It was one of those days that reminds you why we have so many snowbirds, and they were all out on the paths this morning. The bell is much nicer than yelling, that's for sure. I think the sound carries better, too. https://photos.smugmug.com/Bike/Fuji...1%20159-XL.jpg |

Yes, it's all gone because we've had some warm weather. We've had wide swings in temperature, which I'm told are part of climate change. The previous upswing caused some flooding upstate where it doesn't usually flood. The snow melted fast, and the ground was frozen, causing the floods. One of our roads was closed. Now it looks like they plowed the ice onto the fields beside the road.

Have you read Bike Snob NYC when he refers to Minnesota? He always shows this image: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wb8bAl1P-N.../minnesota.jpg That happens here, certainly, but it's not the norm. Personally, I only ride when it's above 10°F. Anything lower and, no matter what you wear, your fingers and toes get cold and numb. But maybe that makes me a Minnesota wimp? Or maybe not: The Baron in Winter Either way, I would rather ride in shorts and a T-shirt, amongst sand and palm trees any day. |
My sweetie and took the tandem out again today. The weather was cool, sky overcast, roads wet from snow melt and drizzle this morning. We ended up with 48.3 miles. Our prime destination was Heart Pond in Chelmsford.
Some sights from today: My sweetie at the beach. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...AtTheBeach.jpg We had the beach all to ourselves, except for that guy ice fishing out in the distance. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...oOurselves.jpg Ferns was nearly deserted, no bikes at all except ours. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...EmptyFerns.jpg Of course the bike got a bit dirty. That's how we judge how much fun we had, the dirtier the better! http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...018/Dirty1.jpg This is not a thorough street. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...oughStreet.jpg This is. http://www.theworld.com/~muller/pics...reauStreet.jpg It was a good day. |
@DQRider, thanks. I think my limit is normally 20ºF or 25ºF, depending on wind, though I did ride in 15ºF recently.
Too bad Pete Hickey's Winter Cycling Tips is no longer available. He wrote it long ago. He's a professor in Ottawa and commutes by bike year round. His advice and his pictures were quite eye opening. |

I went to the Des Moines bike expo Saturday the 27th. I didn't spend much time at the expo but I got pretty good ride in on the intown trails. It was 56 degrees and sunny. I didn't want to go home...

I finally put together my old beater '84 Panasonic Sport 1000! Got it almost done yesterday and went out for just 15 minutes, so cold! Everything checked out so sitting around bored today I thought heck let's shake her down. 22 mph wind from the south, but at 34°F it was above freezing! Whatever now I can post to C&V ha ha!
First I thought, ok we'll do 13 miles. Then I was like heck let's take it out of town. Either way I ended up on the high trestle and put down 56 miles today. Coming back sure was fun with the wind to my back! Full speed in 52x14  |

All of our rain and snow seems to be going up north to @Wildwood and @northbend. Warm and sunny here and talk of drought...what are you gonna do but ride right?
