What is your preferred top tube length? I was also looking for a big (62/63cm) touring bike for my self for awhile. The problem I find with the huge majority of them was really short top tubes even on a 62cm bike. I mean 56cm and under top tubes on a 62cm. I bought and resold three of them (Schwinn Passage, Schwinn Voyageur, and a Raleigh something) because of the top tube size. I eventually found a Nishiki Seral tourer that had a 59.5cm top tube and kept it. I put the most mileage on that bike than any other of my other bikes this year.

Dawes RealmRider
Out taking a walk about 3 months ago, and noticed this Dawes laying in the front lawn of someones house. Was thinking later, "I should go knock on the door and ask about the bike..." But, I forgot.
Well fast forward to yesterday (1-7-08) and that Blue Dawes popped in my head! I make a detour and swing over to where the house was, and sure enough, the bike is still laying in the front yard. I grab a piece of paper from my truck and leave a note in the door...something to the effect of: 'I noticed your old bike, I fix up old bikes as a hobby, if you want to get rid of it, I'd be happy to give you a little something for it. Thanks...) I get a call today from the owner and she says, 'come and get it out of my yard. It was my husbands and he doesn't want it anymore.' Can't beat free! It's pretty far down the list of clean / lube projects...but I'll post some pics in a month or so of it in its cleaned up stage! |
That fork looks like it could be bent, maybe some frame problems too?

Have you noticed that it seems that all the bikes people have been getting lately look like they have bent forks? What's up with that?

Bicycling Magazines....
Just scored a complete set of Bicycling Magazines from 1974 to present. Not sure what I'm gonna do with them but I couldn't pass them up.
They're all in mint condition as well. Amazing. KRhea |

it would be great if you could get some of the articles and the ads scanned and posted.

Heh. I remember the first issue of Bicycling I ever bought, it was the one with the blue Klein Stage on the cover, probably from about 1981 or 1982.

My LBS gave me this Calender since they know about my addiction to Merckx.:D I put that frame set (65cm and a catch in itself) next to it to show how big it is. It has a bunch of other pics of EM in various races. Maybe I'll post all of them once I crop them.

Picked up a 1988 Miyata 712 yesterday. Pic looks better than actual. Frame has a fair amount of scratches, but no dents or dings. Needs the usual new tires, tubes, seat and bar tape.
Its my size, so it might be a keeper (but then I have to let something else go). Depends how it rides versus the Peugeot P-300 that I need to finish. This is my first Miyata find, although I have had several Miyata/Univegas. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3507/...950be4a6_o.jpg |
I don't know if this is a catch or not? Apparently they left town right after posting it. I saw it within minutes, yet have heard nothing since then(7 AM?) The ad is still there, so who knows if I will get it or not. Any clue as to what model it is? I looked through the vintage-trek database, but don't know what they call the color? Makes it a little difficult. I can see a little gold on the seat tube decal, so maybe Columbus? Did anyone else in Houston try emailing and get a response?,,,,BD
http://houston.craigslist.org/bik/988406032.html Update....Might be an 83 400. The color looks close, as do the cranks. The brake levers definitely have that "Dia compe curvature". http://www.vintage-trek.com/images/t...83/83Trek5.jpg |
I bought this from a crackhead in my neighorhood for $30. What do you think?

I think you need to repaint it very soon, and file off the serial number in the process. If of course you're telling the truth.,,,,BD

Ive got a posting on craigslist to see if I can find the owner. but this is san francisco, who knows where it came from or how long it has been missing. the tires were rotted, the front brake was bent really bad, it was pretty filthy, and they tried to peal off the decals, which are under the clear coat. so it needs a repaint badly.
hopefully I wont hear from anyone. does that sound bad? |
