I had another Catch scare today, lol. My buddy visits the bike shop in the country I went to last weekend, and spots a 80's Raleigh road bike behind some boxes out in a shed. He says, "It's got a triple on it, and cantilever brakes!". I said no way!? I call up the guy, and ask. He seems a little puzzled, then remembers the bike my friend saw. It's a touring bike in my size, and in decent condition. The bad news, cracked frame! Oh well, I'm already picking up a touring bike tomorrow, and have found two in the last 3-4 weeks. Enough already;),,,,BD

Parts, man......parts. Go get that broken bike!

The woman giving it away suggested someone use it to practice taking bikes apart. I don't think she saw it as a viable bike for everyday use. Anyway, I started working on it today. It's a project for a local teenager, a friend of my son's. I swapped the front brake pads and saddle, removed some stuff, adjusted things, checked the rim strips, polished some of the chrome and steel with steel-wool and brasso. I may replace some cables, and I've got a lot more cleaning to do.

This really makes me re-evaluate old bikes. This is heavy by modern standards, with steel rims and all, but still, it's really a kick to ride. Very comfortable and upright. It's going to make a great all-around utility bike.

I would practice taking the handlebars off, and installing drop bars with bar end shifters:D.,,,,BD

This was the a local CL for 3 days and didnt sell but his generic single speed went in 1.

1986 Trek 2000 with mostly Dura Ace and Specialized sealed hubs laced to Mavic MA40's. It has new tires and he threw in 2 more new Hutchinsons tires ($40) and 4 inner tubes ($20).....all for one low price of $200.

It even has an ugly as ugly can be Concor Super Corsa 'comfort' saddle. I figure the ugly seat and Dura Ace freewheel are worth $50 each.

I may put bars on the Kronos like the speedster or that Viscount...or it may end up the front bike for a DIY Xtracycle project. If I'm interpreting correctly, that particular Kronos is road bike geometry using low level MT bike components & a frame (heavy for 1997) using MT steel construction....either way to fit me it's gonna be upright, so it will either be the Xtracycle 'lead' or I will give it a straight/upright bar & let a friend use it until she has a bike of her own.

Says something about these snags: The seller said he had 5 solid emails/calls within just a few minutes of the CL ad going 'live'. I guess "Giant Touring 21 speed bike + Trainer $50" brings our type out in a hurry. For one of the rare times in my life, I was actually the first + had the time to run over & snag it about 10 miles from home. I hunt CL in Atlanta when I'm in town visiting family & it seems like it's crazy like that also...maybe they all are.

Yeah, my seller seller said the phone had been ringing off the hook with people offering to come down from Chattanooga for the bike.

Sweet Speedster!!! Chrome fenders and all! Looks like an upgraded seat? Somebody on E-Bay is asking about $900 for 1974 His & Hers (Speedster & Breeze) 3-speed bikes like yours...don't think there will be too long of a line in front of his door. $25 bike like that...nice "holiday gift from Santa"!

Picked up a 1981 Trek 412 as a partial trade on a bike sale today. Needs the regular service. It came with the original owners manual which is kind of nice. Might be a keeper, will have to see once it is done. Notice the quick release levers are on the wrong size. Also the chain has about five extra loops in it (tangled up).

This was my first trade in. Kind of an interesting process, could be win-win. Buyer got a bike in his desired size, traded one off that was too small for him.

Well, after all the buildup, here's the 520! Did they start the cantilevers post 85, because this one has
regular calipers? And I thought this would have had recessed brake mounts, maybe it's just a washer stuffed into the hole? It's in better shape than I hoped for! Kind of a Frankenstein, but I should be able to do it justice. I have many of the components except for brake calipers.

The bike also has quite a history! It was bought in Decatur, GA. According to him it has been ridden around 25,000 miles, and toured through Europe a couple of times. He would do many of these tours with his son. It's in excellent shape, he must taken very good care of it.

He had the original pedals in excellent condition with the red Christophe straps intact. I tried spinning the axles, and they were stuck almost solid. They were probably taken off very early on, as they're almost pristine. It also came with the old school look pedals that were well worn but still appeared functional. I also got an early insulated Cannondale rack trunk, with the old slanted logo. A Cateye
solar computer, the original Biopace big ring, and a nice condition San Marco leather saddle. I'm not sure if it's the original to the bike, since it has a very shiny suede San Marco installed.

My 1983 Trek 520 has caliper brakes.

Ditto my 1983 Trek 620.

My 82 Univega Gran Turismo and 84 Fuji Touring Series IV both have cantis.

Seems like Trek was a little late to the canti brake on touring bike club.

One or two years the 520 reverted Back to calipers. '89 or '88 I think...

I recently passed on an '84 720 with cantis

$15 at the local thrift store but it needs a back wheel. Its a Corsaro America "Cabrio" 12 speed Mixte

Can't really find anything on the brand. Its is very similar to the Miyata six ten I had. Lug work is the same style and the components used are similar. This was sold by www.greggscycles.com in Seattle and made its way all the way to Marietta GA. All the parts I have checks have Feb 1984 dates on them.

This may become my wife's Mup bike and not a flip if she warms up to it. Her Wally world Schwinn weighs a ton and this is much lighter. It looks like it will fit her at least. Its rideable despite the back wheel so once it stops raining I'll send her around the block and see what she thinks. Just dropped a line to the guy I sold the Miyata too as he made the comment he may swap it to 700c's and it has a very nice set of Araya rims with the same Suntour cluster he may sell back to me at a good price.

Interesting parts on it. If nothing else it was worth it if the hardware.

Wow! That downtube sure looks curved. Not sure whether that's by design or due to some misfortune though.

<edit> Just held a straight edge up to it, and by gosh if it isn't straight. That's one heck of an optical illusion - induced by the angle of the lettering.

That does look curved. I went and put a straight edge on the bike to make sure! :lol: It is straight.

Parked it in the den so the wife could see it. She is still eyeing it...I hope she is warming to it. That will effect what I do to it. If she likes it I HOPE I can get the rims from the Miyata back if he swapped the 700's. They are and serviced ready to go and the correct year. Put a set of Aero brake handles, inlines and a nice cork bar wrap and that should make her a happy camper (she is new to drops). May try to find a set of Bar ends for it as well but I'l see what she thinks about the stem shifters.

Other then scratches the frame is really good. I'm still not sure if I like the color. See what it looks like cleaned up. Its rough enough paint and with it being off brand I can bring myself to repainting it to a color she likes more. I'm liking the color scheme on BikeDude's 520.

Two Motobecane Mirages
 

Picked up two Motobecane Mirages from the bay. The first is circa late 1970s and the second is early 80s...maybe '83? I've researched the forum and haven't seen a conclusive way to crack the serial codes for a definitive year for each...but other posts I've read have led me to my estimation of the years for each.

The bikes apparently hung in a garage for years...and I believe it...the pics don't do them justice, they are both in excellent condition. Just doing a quick wipe down on them...I can see they are going to be very pretty once they're cleaned up.

I know they are low level Motos...but they are really good looking bikes.
