Well, I violated one of my cardinal rules on flips: No Mountain Bikes! I picked up a 1990 or 1991, 7 speed Cannondale SM500. Needs tires and some adjustments, otherwise it is in good shape. My first purchase from a newspaper ad. I didn't realize anyone used the old classified ads anymore. Got it at a good price, we'll see how it goes.

I really like those old unsprung Cannondales as nice lightweight urban ute bikes.

Funny, I was thinking of converting it into an urban bike. Wonder how the weight compares to my old steel Trek 950?

Bike looks like it is dying to have some slicks mounted, and I just happen to have a set in the workshop...

Around here it's been hard to find anything but wallyworld bikes, but on a feeling I called a CL ad.
Thing is, I see this guy on a regular basis, he lives at the other end of the block.

I figured that if I did feel like a restoration, well I'd better clean the components first, and in the mean time, I think its pretty, and not as rusted as a letour I recently got for a friend.

I commuted 1100 miles last year on a M400 made Hybrid and really enjoyed it. I ran a Specialized Crossroad in the back (rated 85PSI) and a Specialized Hemisphere in the front. Rode nice and smooth on the road and still enough bite for dry single track riding. The only bummer is C-Dale mountains have really long top tubes. That bike should be in the 25-27lb range depending on tires.

I also avoid "Mountain" and even Hybrids but somehow I have 3 right now that I am trying to move. Got them cheap and other then maintenance and an inner tube two of them are just clean up and resell to see if I can make a quick $20-30.

The "dumb one" was a well abused Peugeot US express step through that just wont leave. Needs tires and I'll be upside down if I buy tires for it. It rides ok but even with the Cro-mo frame it is a brick. I got suckered in by the factory installed Dyno light. Figured I could sell the light separate but it is nothing special and the frame has brazed on bracket making it incomplete to sell.
Advertising it as a "Bring tires and $40". Maybe I need to make it a single speed and put a $200 price tag on it to get rid of it. :lol:

Here is my weeks catch (If nothing good shows up at my local thrift today). My Camera is no longer focusing proper so excuse the lack of sharpness.

The first is a 87 Georgina Terry Actually posted about it a few days ago but this is a better picture. No your eyes do not deceive you it has a 27 rear and 24 front. This bike has zero wear. It has been sitting in somebody's garage for the last 22years. The Freewheel is clean. The tires are original. The rims are perfect. Diacompe brakes and Shimano Light action derailleurs with indexed shifters.
The best part is it is my wife's size.

The Second is a 1991 Trek 720. Wish it was a 1984 720 but what can you do?

I am really wondering what Trek was doing with the 720's. The 80's 720 was a fine touring bike. The 90's 720 is a Hybrid but here is where it gets strange....this bike still has full rack and fender braze on's including the mid fork. Only thing it lacks is the set under down tube bottle braze on.
I am trying to find some frame measurements for both years. Vintage Trek's brochures lack them. I really am starting to think that it has Touring bike Geometry with riser bars. Going to compare it to my T700 today.
Decent parts on it. Diacompe brakes and Suntour Acushift derailleurs with thumb shifters. 700x38's on Araya (I think need to check again) rims. Needs an inner tube and cleaning but really good shape otherwise. Rides nice enough.

For fun and to show just how small that Terry is I did a side by side shot. The 720 is my size at 60cm. I'm 6ft. The Terry is my wife's size at 46cm and she is 5ft. (We look like the Munsters standing side by side. :lol: )

Trek 1400
 

Picked up an 89 (?) Trek 1400 this morning from the local CL...needs tires/tubes/cables, etc....but the frame seems to be a good shape with just a few scratches, and all Shimano 105 components....I think it will clean up nicely.....:)

I was in a quandry whether to finish my black Ross Mt Hood(?) or junk it. I guess I'm going to junk it, because I found this at the flea market this morning! Much better condition, just years of garage dust and a speck of rust here and there. Looks completely bone stock from end to end. Has Zefal Mtn fenders and a Blackburn rack as an add on. It's EXACTLY the same as my other one! Same color, size, etc..,,,,BD

I'd like to see how that goes for you. I picked up the one i have with the same thought in mind. A friend had one in the late '80s that I rode a few times & when one showed up on the local CL (excellently listed with no picture & titled "cannondale 15 speed") I couldn't resist. I'm mounting city semi-slicks, fenders, a rack & fitting with a road triple crankset, some fine 7 speed Deore derailleur/shifters & a set of tektro v-brakes...definitely more transformation work than you'd do for a flip, but i'm just doing this one for myself. Oh, as is, mine weighed in at 25lbs.

I pulled a Trek Millennium out of the dumpster. No wheels or seat but complete other than that. Cromo frame and forks and alloy rd but everything else is steel. I have an old $10 HardRock that is too big for me so I am thinking pulling the wheels and seat off or it and adding them to the Trek. It should make a good beater. Does anyone a have any info on this model of Trek?

My wife picked up a nice 1980 Trek 412 at a garage sale this morning. It even came with an oversized Cannondale seat bag, with a few tools and a couple of spare tubes!! And a good frame pump! While the thrift stores have just about dried up, the garage sale and Craigs List finds are improving. Time to change my game plan!

The bike has a kind of cool serial number: 000041!

This is my second 412 find this year (2009). The other one already has a new home. This one looks to be in really good condition. Needs tires, lever hoods, and cables. I already picked up several pairs of lever hoods from Niagara. Looks like I should have ordered more...

OK, another garage sale find today. Bought it right, so hopefully it will come out alright, as it is my first single speed or perhaps a two speed. It is a Schwinn Racer, serial # FG087127. Looked up the code, shows it to be a 1971 bike (it sure looks older than that to me).

Frame looks really solid, the rims and fenders will need the full oxalic treatment. Also, the rear hub is pretty large, and the bike freewheels backwards (at least now it does). I am guessing this is a two speed that needs some work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

After a long dry spell, I have picked up six bikes in the last week. So my stock of flippers is now replenished.

Two Catches This Week
 

I made 2 finds this week. After much searching for a small frame for the wife I found one. Now I just how she enjoys riding and keeps it up. She's doing great so far.
I found a mint Miyata 110. This bike is perfect, not a scratch on it. The only thing it needed was need tape and a good cleaning and new tires. I used RobbieTunes clean method and it worked like a champ. If anyone knows what year it is please let me know.

As far as the travel time and expense, maybe a quarter mile, literally "the end of the block," it took longer to go to the atm.

Are the hoods fairly universal and is niagara online?

Mutt, I believe your Miyata is a 1988. Scroll to the far right of this chart and it shows a 110 in dark platinum w/red.
