I knew this bike would be appreciated. It's a tricky situation: due to the damage as a complete bike it's not worth enough to bother shipping to someone, I don't think that I'd be comfortable selling it to a stranger locally, and it really doesn't fit me. It's just too big.

I think I may either strip it for parts, and give away the frame and fork locally to someone who is aware of the risk or put some upright/riser bars on it to reduce the reach and use it as a fast townie. But I really don't need another townie, and I'm out of room in the bike shed.

Sigh. Too many bikes, such a nice problem to have. Maybe I'll just have to try a stupid-short stem on it and see if that makes it fit. Pedaling geometry is good, I just have to get the reach back another 20mm. It's just that a 70/80mm stem on a 58cm bike will look so silly!

Oh well, it'll be loaned out for a bit to a friend who's bike was stolen so I don't have to decide for a bit longer...

Underside of the down tube, a ripple can be felt in the tubing about 5cm back from the lug point as well:

Top of the down tube:

The top of the top tube has some paint cracking just behind the lug point, bottom of the top tube has no visible damage.

I remember when my buddy got into this accident - him and another friend of mine were riding pretty hard, drafting each other, passed by a mega babe, both of them scoped her out and WHAM! They're both on the ground.

My friend who owned this bike at the time never got into riding again...

It is a good problem sometimes. Let us know what you decide to do.

Thanks for that link, I was unaware of the recall. I have a set of those in my possession on a bike I bought to flip and then the peddle hole stripped out rendering the crank useless. Now I can get it replaced.

I LOVE GARAGE SALES!!!!

My GF and I decided to go garage sale shopping this morning..And on the second stop...

Inside the front corner of the garage I spied a set of wheels, and they had oil port covers in the middle of the hubs... Then I see a crank, and a set of bars and under it all, a frame. Yes it was a pile of parts.. Then I spot the word fuji, and see only chromed drops and fork crown. All the top tube cable guide clamps slid to the back.. Fuji on the seat tube, and I automatically go to the top tube for the model name.. "The Ace" is what it said. 2nd gen Dura ace brakes and cranks, Nitto Universiade and Pearl9 stem. It's all there but the derailleurs, and I have those, hehe.. The best part, right about the time I added up the parts, I see the price tag...

ONE DOLLAR!,,,,BD

Oh yeah, my size too

Until I can get a pic...

Went to a local town-wide garage sale this morning and, at one of our last stops, asked if they had any bikes and he said, "well there's an old Motobecane in the garage" YES! Came home with an unknown yr, 23" Motobecane Nomade, low level Shimano 6spd, in blue. It's complete but needs a ton of TLC. Already have it stripped down to the frame and I'm contemplating going singe speed with it. Who knows. Anyway, I'm pumped! Pics when I decide to put it back together.

I knew a guy who found a car the same way. It was just missing the keys.

On second thought, sounds like a divorce case. Maybe you should check out to see who threw it out...she might be looking for a friend to talk to

A bad before pic to be sure, but then I don't have a back yard anymore. Taking pics outdoors involves driving somewhere else these days.,,,,BD

I PROMISE the after pics will be WAY better

Seem to be having trouble loading pics........

I went to a youth services bicycle auction today and picked up a '91 Schwinn Sierra MTB upgraded with and awesome vintage Race Face triple crankset, frame is in great shape as well. A Trek Aluminum 1100 that needs some clean up and new tires. A Raleigh Pursuit and a Sekai 2700...........Frame decal on the Sekai says Tange Double Butted High Tension Tubing Throughout (double butted hi-ten...is that normal?) It's outfitted with Suntour Cyclone Black, the coveted 165 Sugino cranks, Mikashima Unique pedals, SR forged stem, Sekai Deluxe suede saddle and Suntour GS drops.

Thanks for the posting! Apparently my browser (and computer) are too old for certain things to work. The links on the
flicker page only work as far as uploading and viewing. Some "buttons" just do not work at all. Like on ebay, I cannot enlarge pics. Kind of sucks, but someday I plan to have another dual core Mac like I had in Houston.,,,,BD

What coveted Sugino cranks? What are you doing with the Sekai?

The Sugino 165s or other brands I guess are popular with the fixed crowd. Shorter cranks help to reduce/eliminate pedal strike when cornering. I'm not really sure what I'm ging to do with it. Wheels are in reasonably good shape, I'll probably overhaul it, replace tires, tubes and barwrap, bent bars need replacing, new grease in the bearings, etc., then flip it. It is my size but I have more bikes than I can shake a stick at right now.

Picked this up at Goodwill yesterday after my 12 year old son talked them down from $40.00 to $30.00

1963 Varsity, it's got some really neat details like braze on Huret downtube shifters, interesting stem, different crank than later bikes, still a tank but kind of cool.

I'm going to have to get my legs in shape for this Fuji. I just came to the horrible realization, that it combines a small close ratio freewheel, with a 47/52 crankset. Thank goodness it's flat around here. The South ocean breeze will still be a challenge though. Some days lately there's been a 20+ mph headwind.

The frame is polished up, and alot of the stuff I thought was rust was just dirt or grease. It's not perfect mind you, but I am not going to toss it for a few rusty chips and light scratches. Overall it really shines, although it's not quite the same color as under the frame hardware.,,,,BD

Those close ratio freewheels can be fun... just swapped in a 14-21 7 speed (Regina) on my Cooper which does not see much epic climbing which is a 14-19 single step with a 2 step jump to the 21 tooth bailout gear. I have some spare bodies and a Regina cog board (another cotd) so will build up a second freewheel that I can use for hillier rides and swap that in as needed.

Will also swap the 14 for a 13 toot cog to bump up the top end on the close ratio block.

I like that, send in the kid to do the heavy lifting. And that Varsity is way cool.

Yours looks like it's well loved and used, that's what I like to see.

BTW-I still had to lift the thing on to the roof of the car

Actually he's the wheeler dealer, he figured it out on his own and yes I am proud of him.
