Picked up this Marinoni for a song, required a lot of work. I have replaced the wheels with some Phil Wood /Open Pro clinchers.

What a great vintage find. It looks to be an early 70's era bike maybe late 60's because it has the crank with the cotter pin fastener. It doesn't have the original shift levers but they do look cool, the original were Simplex like the derailleurs...or at least like the rear, I can't see the front to make out what it is. I think it's the Carlton Raleigh which was better made then the plain Raleigh's. If I was a betting person I would bet it's a 1970 model...but it's a guess. If you want to restore it just do a web search and get information as to which parts were found on it originally and try to get it back to that state, a lot of those components can be found on E-Bay and sometimes you can find new unused stuff, but since the bike is scratched up not sure if spending for new parts would be worth it. It was the least expensive bike Raleigh sold that came with aluminum rims and made out of the Carlton factory.

The decals and the lugs point to it being a 1973.

A good friend gave me this 2003 Giant Yukon today. It has the original Hutchison Mosquito's on it. I've already put a shorter Bontrager stem on it and fliped the stem.

So I just got this Windsor Carrera Sport . From what I can gather, it is a 1973 model, made in Mexico and has all of the original components.

Ignore all the random crap in the background.

Is this a road bike or a touring bike? So can anyone give me more information about this bike?

I was halfway looking for a nicer bike for my GF, when one dropped in my lap, lol. I just found the smallest Schwinn Circuit ever made I imagine. Or actually it found me. It's a 1988 model so second only from a Paramount. FULL Sante in nice but dirty condition. The paint is pretty much chip free, but does have some overspray on it for some reason? It scrapes off easily so I can save it. The Cinelli stem and bars are in pristine condition. The only catch?? My GF got mad at me for paying 100 bucks for it. It might not be staying, sigh. I mean 100 is a steal for this thing, right?,,,,BD

Pics later if it stays...:-/

Yesterday, I cleaned up at the local Dump. By cleaned up, I mean just that. I sorted bikes, transporting those worthy of salvage to town, and swept the area clean of debris. I left two partial bikes there, to help draw people's attention to the bike drop of here please area.

Today, in freezing cold and after a night of rain, I stopped by the same Dump on my way to do the last of the work to prepare for Bicycles for Humanity - Thunder Bay's ninth shipment of bicycles to Africa. Anyway...

As I pulled into the Dump, I immediately noticed that more bikes had arrived, and there was one pretty darn nice Rocky Mountain mountain bicycle there and it was in pretty good shape. There was also a high end Norco mountain bike and a not too bad early to mid eighties Nishiki road bicycle, the Rally model, and nothing to get all excited about.

The bikes were all together - literally! The rain that had fallen during the close to freezing night did freeze, coating all of the bikes in a layer of ice, complete with baby ice-sickles.

All of the bikes have already been turned in to Bicycles for Humanity, except for the Rocky Mountain. I want to refurbish it, take some pictures for my website and then sell it at the Bicycles for Humanity & Lakehead University Student Union Autumn Vintage Bicycle Sale...

Anyway, the Dump was kind to us this week and bicycles have begun to flow a bit early this year - yahoo!

This sort of reminds me of planting potatoes...

It just takes a burying a few little spuds to give the ground the idea of growing more!

In my quest for a cromo vintage mtb frame to convert to gravel/touring/city duty in a large size I put an ad up looking for old MTBs. Got a response about a Giant Yukon. It wasn't the size I'm looking for (22") its a 19". But for $25 I picked it up to flip.

Nothing real special but a cool frame with okay parts, and wicked 80's paint job.

I have one of those also...which I'm planning on selling because it's slightly too big for me. It's an interesting bike in a lot of ways (lug work, chroming, made in Mexico, has really wide range gearing). I got it about the same time a friend dropped about $1100 on a Surly LHT and ultimately we decided the Windsor was a nearly equal steed for a long trip except that it lacks the plethora of spots to bolt on racks & cages...It's a cool bike IMHO. Mine is apparently all original except the seat, bar tape & tires.

Chris_in_Miami 04-03-12 07:56 AM

Hah, it's raining Windsors! I picked this one up on Sunday:

What's all that junk in the background? Just messin with you!

Great find. That bike is a road bike not a touring bike. The big giveaway is the lack of eyelets for a rack to connect to the frame, and the geometry of the bike is to compact. It's probably more of a sport class bike which is in between a road and a touring bike. Sport bikes come with taller wider range of rear gears as yours does unless some previous owner changed the gears to sport gears, but I doubt it.

It appears to be a late 70's made bike, probably 78? The frame quality was lower end for that manufacture but it was a pretty frame to look at with the fancy lugs and chrome half forks and stays; and I like the look of cable clips instead of guides, not sure why I like that look. I don't recall all their models now but I think their next one up from yours was called the Super Carrera, then the Competition, then the Professional. Their touring bike was called the AM6 and had a more stout frame for rigors of touring and was probably between the Competition and the Professional in terms of frame and component quality.

If you got the bike for free it's a good fine. Some posters here may say to convert it to a fixie, I'm not so sure if I would do that. I like originality, and older bikes deserve remaining so.

I was on the lookout for a lugged mountain bike, and disparing that I would never find any such creature, contented myself with other lugged bikes, road bikes and roadsters. I was visting my uncle, who owned a parking lot at the edge of town. Now this is a grassy lot, and sometimes things get lost admist the long grass in the back.

It was a slow day and there weren't many cars that needed attending, so I ambled towards the back, to enjoy the view when I stumbled upon a mountain bike frame with rusty wheels. A lugged frame with wheels. I asked my uncle if it belonged to anyone, and to my delight found out that it was mine for the taking.

Taking a rag and some oil, the frame and wheels cleaned up nicely, and added the rest of the parts over the better part of two months. The VO chainguard came from an old singlespeed project.

Beautiful bike. Worth a lot of work, unquestionably. Is that a model name or a previous owner's name on the top tube?

Yeah there is something very beautiful about that bike.

Anybody got tips for fishing for dumpster bikes? I'm trying to get a hold of a vintage MTB but I'm not sure where to start looking. Maybe suburban communities would be best, or downtown alleyways?

Work a local scrap yard and hope no one else has beat you to it...
