I think the theme of this thread is most of the bikes are 'rescued' from..... well from the trash heap, goodwill, a yardsale.

You are looking in the wrong place. While I occasionally find deals on Craigs List, they have a few traits in common.

1. The ads are terrible: poor or no pictures, no description, no size, etc.

2. They are scooped up fast. They will not wait for you to get home from work, or for Saturday, or whatever. As soon as they pop up, someone will scoop them up.

3. They are probably not in your local C/L. They may be in the next town, or two towns away, or a couple of states away. My last C/L scoop (two weeks ago) was four hours from where I live, one way. The one prior to that was 100 miles away.

There are probably scoopers like me in your area, and they will pounce on deals. So use other channels: garage sales, thrift stores, neighborhood newsletters, etc.

Hello Guys I just got a Vintage Trek 400 , I think its early 80's, I plan to refurbish it

I'll post pics when I find my camera
I was at the flea market and the guy was asking for $70, I tried to hassle him for $40 but we settled at $50
There was another bike (better condition and newer) there was well but I being a newb and this my first "real" bike I didn't recognize the
brand and and my uncle was only going to buy one bike so I went with the trek

It is in great condition, But it has these unique pedals, I did some research and there toe clips called "christophas" made in france, I am not sure if they are of any significance just putting it out there

Welcome to C&V Budfut -
Even without seeing the other bike, I am relatively certain you made the best choice - an absolutely great deal!
Treks are very highly regarded.
Find that camera soon though - we have a rule around here that says "pics or it didn't happen" and you don't want your Trek 400 to disappear!

Picked up this 15 Speed Maruishi Touring bike but can't find much info on it, mountech derailleurs, sugino rt triple, gold 5 speed rear, ishiwata tubing, 27" arayas with sunshine hubs, cantilever brakes and a bunch of braze on's. Bike is a little on the tall side for me at 61" from bb to middle top tube, so I'll probably just sell it once I figure out a price for it.

Japan invades my French bike collection

My French bikes are all grumbling noisily to themselves in le garage this morning. A newcomer from the Orient has taken up residence on the bike stand and Mssr. PX10, in particular, is sniffing huffily about this $10 thrift store purchase. "Be still!" I tell him, "This lady sports a cool head badge."

She's going to need a lot of cleaning up before she can hang out with Mssr. Follis.

My guess is that it is an early Maruishi Tour Ace (TA15), and I would not relinquish it so easily. Lots of braze-ons, canti's and a fabulous Ishiwata frame.
Here is a later on-line catalog.

And now an SR Mixte for my wife, it even has the original tires!

Shame it is too large for you. Looks like a nice touring model. Touring bikes have been commanding a premium and it should sell for a pretty good price -- If you want to get specific pricing ideas post over in pricing and evaluation fourn.

The world's fastest bike sale. I love free money.

robtown 08-16-10 05:10 PM

ARGH! The two huge community yard sales (mine and the neighboring one) are being held the same Saturday in September. Those spring and fall sales are one of the best sources for bikes. Sometimes the haul is awesome, sometimes I have to settle for more MTB and ladies frames. Awesome is better :)

Nashbar had some decent alloy drop bars on sale for about $10, as well as some good deals on road saddles and brake levers.

If that leather saddle has life left in it, you might want to put a different one on the bike before you sell it. That one might work out nicely on a "keeper". The bell looks pretty nice, too.

Unfortunately the bell was covered in rust, seat was the selling point of the bike haha. I don't dig on leather seats much though, and nothing is ever a keeper!

I really, really like this bike. A name you don't see too often and obviously that is an incredible bike, but it doesn't seem to fit into this thread. It looks like you put a good bit of time and money into that build. Was it in fact a catch of the day/saved from the dump super score?

It is already wearing Nitto b115 drops and shimano aero levers with white hoods. Just need to get some bar tape (all I have is cloth) a good cleaning and I will take it for a ride. I can then sell the scyclip north road syle bars that were on it and the Diacompe bmx levers seperately. I might change the seat post too, it is a two piece and does not look right.

Picked up an 88' Miyata 512. He sold it cheap because of a cracked rim ($20). Came with low mileage Duraskins, 3T stem and Cinelli bars...58cm
