Tom,
Someone made one to align his fork on the Mechanics Forum. He used carpenter's laser, U bolts and plywood. He realigned the fork blades with it. I don't recall the thread name. Will |

Was mowing the lawn last Friday, and looked over just at the right angle, and saw an old road bike wasting away behind the catty corner neighbors house behind me. I was like WTH, and I just got rid of my old binoculars a couple of weeks ago. The grips had turned gummy, sigh.
What I can see is black paint, no turkey wings on the white hooded non aerobrake levers(Shimano or DC, not sure), toe clips with straps, dark looking rims, dirty white wrap. Looks like a Schwinn of decent quality, although the stem is obscured from view. Given the no turkey wings, it probably has DT shifters. At least I hope it does. I took a walk over and a woman in her mid 40's answered the door. The bike was her Husbands old bike, probably from about the time they met, hehe. She said he would probably be tickled for me to have it, but maybe there's some sentimental value there. She took my name and number, and said it may be tomorrow before they call.,,,,BD Got my fingers crossed that it's a decent bike, and he wants to pass it on:D. Got a pic... Might be something a little less spectacular. Looks like long reach brakes, and stem shifters the camera caught better than I did. Oh well. Should make a decent trainer bike for my nephew. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/Whatisit.jpg |
48cm 88 Trek 1000 a mix of Sakai, Shimano 105, Wolber GTX rims and 12speed.

Well, was I thrown for a loop or what? It's a 24" wheel Raleigh Capri, 410 tubing and steel wheels. Yep, it was free. Can you get 24" tires still? It might even be too small for my nephew, since the top tube hits me right about knee height:lol:. One pretty cool bonus though? It has Shimano 600EX Triangle pedals, with steel toe clips in good shape. It will clean up nicely, mostly rain/tree dirt, and not a lot of rust.,,,,BD
Do they make 24" alloy rims? |
I had a Nishiki Proportional that had 700s in the rear and a 24 in the front.
There are a couple tires on ebay, but not much

I just talked to my friend in Houston, and he has a need for a small road bike for a disabled family member. Sooo, it's going to a good home where it's needed. I pick up the Competition from him this weekend, and I will drop the Capri off to him. Thankfully I got the Ramcharger carb issues ironed out, and I've even got a working radio and A/C:D. Should be a nice trip.,,,,BD

The last couple of weeks have been very productive. First, I got this frankenbike with Zeus components. I was really interested in the Record/Open4CD wheels, figured could flip the rest. The dropout has been repaired, the rear brake is mis-assembled, the respray is poor, but there seems to be a nice frame under there somewhere. I will start a new thread about it.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/P1030882.jpg Then, on impulse I got this Zunow. The paint has some flaws, but looks OK from 10 feet if your taste runs towards 80's psychedelic, but I just wanted to see how I like the ride: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/P1030907.jpg Then, I found this nice early 70's Pogliaghi, definitely a keeper: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/P1030905.jpg Then comes this '74 Masi GC, with a repaint and an assortment of Campy parts, 58cm instead of 55-57 I like, but at a price I can't refuse. I had been wishing for a Masi GC as a daily rider, this one seems to fit the bill: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x...t/P1030876.jpg I normally ride to work, but had to drive a couple days for errands, and ended up seeing the Pogliaghi and Masi listed on CL very close to me! Call it divine intervention... To cap it all off, also got the '92 RB-1 posted on "Are you looking.." thread. There is a small dent on the top tube, I ended up paying quite a bit more than the initial asking price, but on the plus side it came with 8sp DA STI shifters wired as brake levers, but shifters seem to work OK. He must have realized from the email responses that his asking price was a little low... I had to leave town right after, so didn't even have time to take a picture. As I always say, when it rains it pours. Now I wish I had passed on the first two. I am fast running out of space, not to mention that my bike fund is deep in red, but high on inventory  I will spend the next couple weeks trimming the herd. |
Might be the catch of the year? Not mine, but figured the 'saved from the crusher' crew might get a kick out of this story. Who knows, maybe its a hoax?

After not having much luck finding anything in my area for quite some time, I came across this today at Salvation Army. It's a 64 cm 1985 Trek 400. It's much too big for me and has some scrapes, but I couldn't stand to leave it.

How about this for a Catch of the Day
This guy picked up a bike at a yard sale for $5 that was custom built for Floyd Landis. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/post/B...urn=top-262060 http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ept_spor...FndmDDdZAYiu6y |

Free is good right? My job allows me to be in alleys, easements and backyards. anyway while on a job in the middle of nowhere Idaho I noticed this Centurion and a half dozen other bikes in a overgrown backyard. Over the course of several months I have been to this local several times, and was finally able to talk to the home owner about "the bikes out back". Long story short the home owner said to take what I wanted! When I first saw this bike, all I noticed was the aero brake levers, and that it had been spray bombed flat black. Well it turned out the be a Centurion "Iron Man" with Shimano 600 bits and pieces. The bike looks really bad (because of the flat black paint), I'm hoping the parts will clean up, and if the frame is straight, I'll have it painted and put it up for trade. I'm encouraged by the fact that the seatpost and stem were greased and came right out! (unlike the cherry looking Trek 520 I got a while back with the stuck seatpost from hell). Wish me luck! Cheers, Chris |
Chris W, from what I hear about the Centurion Ironman, that bike will win your heart, and you'll keep it. I recommend you ride it BEFORE you paint it. You may want to turn it into an errand bike, a guest bike, a bike you ride when your main squeeze has a flat tire, or whatever.

Cheers, Chris And +1 to what noglider says - you may just fall in love with it teh way it is and forget about putting it up for trade. After all, you don't have to recoup a big investment here (unless you do paint it). |
It's a one year only color scheme, IIRC, and should be made of Tange 1 tubing. The year before it was a Comp TA, and the year after it got split into two models, with the Miami Vice paint schemes. Someone correct me if I am wrong? Hell of a find either way, especially for free!! Mine sold for over $300.,,,,BD

These 2 were a CL find. The Fuji is a 79 Royale(according to the info i found on the Classic Fuji site).
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...t/IMG_2741.jpg This one is a Super Le Mans, but I don't know the year..yet. Maybe someone here can point me to info this model? http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...t/IMG_2754.jpg They both need some work, and the paint on the Centurion is junk, but they are complete and savable. |

I picked these two up off CL. Seller worked on a trash truck and picked them out of a dumpster, they cost me $35 each.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/DSCN0221.jpg Noglider and Auchen, thanks for the kind words. The frame is a 56cm, about two cm too big....I'm sure it will land into worthy hands! Cheers, Chris |
