Picked up two bikes at garage sales today. One was a Giant RS-940, probably late 1980s. The other was a bike in a box, disassembled, and showing signs of serious distress.
The Giant had been converted to grip shifters, ugh. I'll post more pics of the bike in the box, as I am rebuilding it now, and it is coming out pretty good. Got to love the UPS shipping barcode on the box........ Why am I not surprised? I pulled the handlebars out of the box, as they were jammed up against the top tube, with no padding. Wanted to prevent any additional damage on the ride home. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2044/...4e935f81_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2162/...68483c42_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2116/...4e914551_b.jpg http://www.flickr.com/photos/jfk_wrk_photos/5720727674/ |
It's been many moons since I've seen roadie Gripshift action!
|
Geez, why can't there be a dump like you guys have around here?
|
Did you get the back story on the box? I wonder if the person you bought it from tried to sell it on eBay and botched the shipping...
|
Nothing big today bike wise. I did pick up a decent Huffy cantilever cruiser with a box of various bike parts for $10. It will make a nice rat rod project bike.
It is always good to have other non-bike items on your list when you head out. Last week I paid $30 for a tub of 300 CDs from a lady moving back to Sweden. I have already sold 140 of them for $350. I should eventually get about $750 for my $30 investment. That is much better than the CDs I have at the bank. |
Wow, that's impressive kingfish! Do you sell locally or via the Internet?

We have a policy at our co-op that, when trikes get donated we give them to people who need them and cannot afford them as a new trike is an expensive beast.
This one has a rear drum brake and a wide range 6 speed drive and my housemate, who has a severe disability that limits his walking and ability to balance on a 2 wheeled bike looked like a 10 year old kid when he took his new bike for a ride. He is already planning to go out tomorrow morning for coffee (with me) and when he saw the basket the first thing he said was that he could take the dog for rides and she already went for a quick spin and seemed very approving of the new "dog bike". He also said that shopping will be awesome now that he can carry more stuff home in the basket as he should not be carrying things too far (he does not drive). He will share it with our neighbour and his friend and she too would like to get riding and for her it is probably a matter of life and death and she is morbidly obese and has limited ability to walk. Will replace the POS shifter with an orphaned Suntour half ratchet thumbie tonight and put some Kool Stop salmon pads up front and think I have some spare lights and a nicer saddle as the one on the bike has bent rails. This is one of the best catches ever... it is nearly mint and even came with it's orginal owner's manual and I rode it home 8km and found it to be a very pleasing ride although my back hates me now. Am still pretty happy to see the look on my housemate's face...he is the kind of person who has very little but would give you the shirt off his back if you asked... said he envied people he saw who had trikes and now he has one of his own. :) http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/ccmtrike1.JPG |
nice trike :)
|
neat story that the trike will makes such a difference in his life and will probably be even more appreciated than if had been some high end C&V race bike we were all drooling over.

Been pleasantly surprised with the clean up so far. Bike was none too clean when it was dumped into the box. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2575/...ddf753dd_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2547/...e67a9dd8_b.jpg |

Good for you and your group. We do the exact same thing with the trikes that we get. This last one was so nice that I would have liked to hang on to it myself for use in a few years. I am getting old and decrepit myself, ya know, eh!
http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...ull_Side_1.jpg Will not be going far and have plans to go and practice riding in a local parkade later. http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/ccmtrike2.JPG Figure my dog will be getting some good miles... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/ccmtrike3.JPG And a little C&V shifter action... http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...ikesuntour.JPG Only issue is that I cannot get the cheapish brakes to park lock and might even replace the levers with something nicer and fabricate a locking system. |
This was part of the dump run yesterday. It's nothing too special, but it is unique. I think it's a a non US model, because I could not pinpoint it on Jim's Peugeot site. It came from the factory with lights and fenders and a rack, and possibly a bell. The steel rims were toast, so I cut the hubs out and kept them. The frame is in very good shape, and it's a 'bigun'(57cm). I like the style of bars on it, although I've never ridden with them.

Just another way to make some beer money. (B) |
Friday afternoon I found a Star Trac Johnny G Pro Spinning bike at one of my regular thrift stops. It was marked $89.98.........when I took it up to the counter I was charged $48 and some change.......apparrently "furniture" was 44% off friday. They retail for around $1200 new and this ones in fine shape. I have had a couple others I purchased in the summer time and sat on (no pun intended) until the Winter months, then sold for a hefty return.

A buddy of mine has been holding out on me for a while on this, but he decided to sell it finally. He posted it on craigslist before telling me, so he had some hearts to break after I picked it up.Here is the worst picture I could get tonight, more tomorrow if the sun is out.http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...o/IMG_1050.jpg

Not from the dump but a catch of the day candidate. I'm waiting to hear back from IF regarding the year built...might be sort of C&V. It's steel and destined to be a classic though so I thought I could get away with posting in there.
Components are a random mix of different generations of Ultegra, mismatched wheels, cheap seatpost/pedals...etc. ( As purchased (I added the saddle). It's likely going to get an 8s Sachs New Success Ergo group and be my new beater/commuter to give the Merckx a rest. http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/w...a/IMG_0776.jpg |

I blew up my toaster, so I biked upto the council dump, just up the hill from my house. I took the toaster to the electrical skip. then away out the gate. I seen a red and black racer in the bike compound at the gate. Thats TI Raleigh colours. I did a u turn and asked the council worker at the bench beside there. he said get the man in the cabin. He said bikes go to recycling. So if I was recycling it, I could have it for free. :)
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/Alecw35/003.jpg A Raleigh Europa with small suntour mechs. Its my size. Its got a shop sticker from the bike shop that used to be round the corner from my house. the pic makes it look a million times better than it is. the chromes lifted off the rims, the chains rusted onto the block. I think I'll put my hybrids wheels on it, to get it moving |
