Any hints on finding out how old my Rossin is? Its got R embossed on fork crown and brake bridge. Theres metal gear cable guides above the BB shell.
I take this means its an early model. I used to have a 1968 Bob Jackson. It had the guides above the bb shell too. Any Rossin pics Ive seen online are bellow bb guides. The Shimano 600 mechs, cranks and brakes are plain. no engraved scrolls. Its got a 105 headset and gear levers. they have the ring to turn to switch index off. The wheels are Campag record low flange hubs with a clip over the oil hole. got a straight thru block on it. Mavic GP4 rims are black anodised. Stainless spokes. Im not sure. I think its had most of the parts changed. Oh yeah. the 2 bags I had, on the day I got it. one was a rucksack. stuffed full of books and things I had got at the sales. Other was a thin bin bag of computer parts. It split minutes after I got it. I repacked my bags. to try and get it home. I think I could have walked home. or even scooted home. Its about 8 miles. flattish cycle path. Sunny day too. I worked on it today. rewrapped the bars as there was about 6" of the bar tops uncovered. no evidence of tribars being on there. I trued the wheels. I adjusted the brakes. I pulled the cinelli bars and stem out of the forks. greased the quill. greased the bar clamp bolt. I oiled round the seat pin. took out the seat clamp bolt. the seat post seized. but it does slightly move back and forth in relation to the top of seat tube. so hopefully it will free up. |

I would just like to add to the previous Rossin post first, that you couldn't talk the seller down to half the asking price is a disappointment for a Scotsman. I guess we'll have to let you slide this time. But don't make a habit of it! Just a bit of fun that. I'm just jealous, that's an exceptional buy and deserves a big heaping of haggis.

Friend just sent me an e-mail... said something about giving me her grandfather's 37-38 Raleigh since she wanted it to go somewhere that it would be loved.
Think that with a new shop space in the works it may get a place of honour. |
my catch of the day. A Colnago ( my guess from 79`) for 100 euros.

Not from the dump, but I picked up a park tool repair stand for 25 dollars off Craigslist!

I was painting with a relative and he mentioned an old bike out back. It was old when he was a kid and he's 28 now. I know nothing about this stuff, I just like to ride. Can one of you bright guys help out here? It says Batavus and intercycle, on the downtube, and it is a folding bike.

Well, it's dutch and I'm going to guess from the sixties by the look of those decals. Should clean up nice...Good snag.

Wow, nice catch! If it isn't your size you will have no problem selling it for some pretty big bucks, that looks like a Dura Ace group on there, right?

Well... the '37 Raleigh has yet to appear but my friend did bring me another bike from 1963 that also belonged to her grandfather and it too is English and was made by Raleigh.
It has some patina to spare... :) http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore5.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore1.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore2.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore3.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore4.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore6.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore7.JPG http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikep...mphbefore8.JPG |
Consider this the "before"...
http://www.ravingbikefiend.com/bikepics/63triumph1.JPG I have already replaced the cables and housings, changed out the rear cog for a bigger one, and installed a fresh chain and a nice looking chain guard... after giving the hub a sip of oil I took it out for a ride and it rolls straight and true and is in excellent mechanical condition. And nothing was seized which speaks to a bike that looks scruffy but was well maintained... and ridden a lot if you look at the pedals. |

yeah i had to use a ton of solvent to de-gunk the brifters, and the drivetrain is pretty trashed.. but for $25 i sure wasn't complaining. it even fits me!
 cool CL search tool btw :D $31 for a 12-26 cassette Crank rings are not horrible price. You will have problems out of those shifters again. The 8 speed are not horrible to disassemble enough to clean them better. Loosen the set screw on the pivot pin and drive the pivot out to get the actual lever out of the body. There is a spring in there so pay attention to who it goes in. Now the Allen bolt on the front needs to come off. There is a return spring under it. Pay attention to the orientation of the spring and any spacers. On assembly you will line up the holes the spring catches on and then need to turn it while holding your tongue just right to get that outer cover back on. push the small lever over and there is a Philips head screw. The whole assembly will now put out of the brake lever and expose the workings. Soak it in carberator cleaner and flush it with brake cleaner and get all the little pawls freed up. Oil up the pawls with machine oil (3in1). light grease where they ride on the cams. Work some machine oil in between anything that moves. Should be fine. |
i don't think i saw any screws on the pivot pin (you're talking about the brake pivot right?) they're working for now

When it cools down that grease will thicken up and that's when you will have the problem come back. The pawl that causes most of the problem you cant get a straight shot at with them assembled. |

I ran across an interesting bike in my wife size. Its a Grant Peterson era 1992 (think) Bridgestone XO-2. This was sold as a 26 inch wheel road bike with 1.4inch Richie Tom Slick tires. The geometry is more road/touring then Mountain. full set of braze ons except mid fork. The frame is 43cm seat post and 51cm top tube. It came with Dirt drops as best I can tell despite Sheldon say most of the XO bikes coming with Mustache bars.
Its a bit beat up but its the frame that counts. Its missing its original Dirt drops but It had a set of Bull Moose bars on it and a Regal Girraldi saddle. I think the rims are original and it has a brand spanking new set of Kenda Kwest tires on it. Somebody was trying to convert it to single speed and laced the back wheel up to a mid 80's Dura Ace threaded hub. That was a neat find. http://www.bikeforums.net/attachment...4&d=1302821110 |
Saved from the Dump today.
Maillard 700 team issue rear hub -VGC 36 almost new 299mm straight gauge DT spokes 36 almost new brass nipples Did not save from the dump. Araya 27 1W rim with one inch hop in it. |

Now that that's out of the way, this Miyata Gran Touring pre-dates the 'vintage miyata' catalogs that end in '81. The owner said that he believes it's an '79. It obviously is older as it has Tange champion Cromo tubing. I just got it home and it qualifies as a boat anchor, none-the-less will be a very fun project. http://i700.photobucket.com/albums/w...iyataGT004.jpg The original rear rack you have on there scared me because of the six bolts holding it together, I was afraid it would collapse under any weight. Enjoy the ride though! |
Yay, a bridgestone! Here's my Dad's $80 MB-3

Picked up a Schwinn LeTour Today
Another lucky find from the dump, today. Needs a bit of work but this time I had the good sense to put air in the tires and make sure it tracked right. Last time I had to do a great amount of work before I had a successful ride on a bike I bought at a garage sale.
This one has a bent small chainring which I think I can fix but otherwise nothing serious. As you can see whoever owned this one certainly could not be considered guilty of over-lubricating the chain. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/m...winnLetour.jpg |
