Still not sure of the year. The serial number was above teh left dropout and it was J43972.

Bought for $15 and just sold for $500.

You have got to be kidding. I had no idea those old Sting Rays were worth that much. That's crazy money.

Anybody have any photos of Suntour Ole' stuff? I guess it was intended to compete with Shimano's Sante' stuff - a designer component group that actually had some performance to back up the image.
I've never seen any, just stumbled on some rumors lately.

Thanks!

Not even close :) It competed with Sante only on looks. Sante was second from the top (or third) in the Shimano hierarchy whereas Ole was second from the bottom or so on the Suntour hierarchy

Just fished this frame set off of eBay for ~$100 delivered. Low end but pretty, and I have all the parts to build it out and move it along. A 50cm Univega Viva Sport in lilac, with chrome fork ends.

Just in time for spring! :)

Here is the 82, 614, I purchased a while back from Craigs List. You may remember it was listed as a 78, 513. I completely disassebled the the bike and cleaned, replaced tires, tubes, crank bearings, bar tape, one shifting cable and chain. I also did some paint work and rear derailer work. I only have to find an original seat so all will be as was, except for the forks. And I still need to get the Reynolds sticker for the frame. This bike rides and shifts smooth. I really like it.

Yesterday, just after leaving the office, I saw a bicycle sticking out of a dumpster. On further investigation it proved to be a very nice Ross 3-speed, girls model, Shimano 333 hub with twist grip shifter. Early 70's I guess. Then I noticed a second bike, a Schwinn Varsity, complete with (very dry) leather saddle; I don't know my Schwinns, but I'm guessing it was a fairly early one, mid 60's maybe? It had a very beefy looking aluminum spearpoint stem. And then I noticed a third bicycle, an English three speed girl's bike, clearly Raleigh-made but badged "Popular Special." The hub date on this was 1960. I pulled the last out and dragged it back to my office --riding my folding bike, pushing the other alongside. Stashed it in the file room and went on my way home. I couldn't go back for the other two; train to catch, no more room in the file room, and so on. No worries, they were gone this morning, so someone got 'em.

Here's the Popular Special:http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4071/...6fd03d02_b.jpg

Condition pretty good; original Raleigh tires, tubes still hold air; wheels hardly need trued; cables intact and don't need adjusted; rust confined to a few spots (left crank arm; back wheel).

Its chief drawback is its present location, on Manhattan. How am I supposed to get this thing home? Maybe I should just Craigslist it here....

Okay, I cleaned it up and put a cover on the seat --they used to sell these vinyl covers for exactly this kind of seat, and I got a NOS one on ebay a while back, so I brought that from home today. As for the rest, I rubbed it with motor oil and scraped some of the scale off it. Updated photo:

Strange thing about this bike: 1" seat post, Raleigh tires, Raleigh frame, etc; clearly a Raleigh made bike. But it has aluminum brakes and levers, and it doesn't say "Nottingham" anywhere on it.

I bought this bike last summer - It needed a lot of work initially and I never got around to posting pics of the finished bike until now.

Thank you Khat -
I was not thinking of taking before and after pictures, because I wasn't even sure it would work out at the time. It had seen more than its share of neglect and abuse. It seems the worse it is, the more my quixotic impulse kicks in to salvage it, when it would really make more sense to pass on it.

Even right now, I have a Motobecane Grand Touring that I'm trying to save: After completely overhauling it with all new stuff, I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to true its hopelessly bent rims. Ultimately I needed to find and replace bent French handlebars, straighten the pedals, replace the rear wheel, brake levers, saddle, and freewheel. And since I want to keep the high flange Normandy front hub, I still need to rebuild it with a new spokes and a new rim. - Of course, I will never get my money out of it when it's done, but I am having fun.

Oscuro 03-05-10 10:55 PM

Well, if it's any consolation: You do beautiful work!

auchencrow 03-05-10 11:04 PM

Thank you Oscuro, I appreciate that ^

Just could not pass this one up. 1987' Bridgestone 550 54cm full stock at a yard sale for 40 bucks. My father in law called me and asked if he should buy it as it seemed like a good deal. I said sure not knowing in what shape it would be in and lo and behold its all original. The owner said he got into riding for a while and then hung it in the garage all these yrs. From the catalog photos I have looked at on the the site I is a dead on with what was offered for sale in 87'. I have rode it and it still tight as ever.

I just got an early 90's (?) Trek 720. It was custom built by the seller, as he worked at a bike coop. It has bar-end shifters which appear to be non-indexed. 56cm frame, I think. It needs a lot of work. He was asking $250, and he accepted $180. I should have offered less, since he accepted my offer instantly.

Is that the all 531 touring bike, or something like an MTB?

noglider 03-06-10 02:34 PM

It's an all-out touring bike with rack braze-ons halfway down the fork. The fork looks MTB-ish, but it's not an MTB at all.

I rode the 1984 720 way back when it was new. It was luscious. I can't wait to try this. Gotta put some tires on it. I just might be able to sell it in a half hour. I have a woman coming over needing a bike. She's training for a mini-triathlon, and it would be a suitable bike.

Noglider -
I'd say $180 for a fine old Trek Tourer is doing pretty well these days- but you know the drill - Without pictures, it didn't happen !
