RECALL:
I went through this last winter. All you need to do is remove the cranks and take them to an authorized Shimano dealer. This is the important part, otherwise they can't do anything for you. They will contact corporate in CA, and they are supposed to send out a refit kit. Consists of a new low end Tourney triple crank, matching UN26 cartridge BB, a new steel Tourney FD, and a new HG50 chain.
I returned two of the recalled cranks, corporate rep tried to give me only one complete kit and a drive side crankarm. I said "REALLY??"
2 weeks later the 2nd kit came into the LBS. Not really the LBS's fault. But make sure they work for you. The recall is still valid.

Had a nice afternoon with an older bike enthusiast friend of mine. He suffered a double stroke recently and is recovering. He was down about no longer able to bike or even wrench on bikes. We were having an unseasonably nice day in the 70s. So, I took him along with me today on a parts hunt. The seller was a cool former racer now coach. The three of us got to talk 'bike' and I got to check out some nice hardware. My friend had a blast and I bought 3 NOS frames (modern Al, not C&V) for my kids and myself. The C&V catch were 3 sets of Bulls-eye pulleys! And Dura Ace 7401 Look pedals, Dura Ace 10 speed bar-ends, a new Tektro rear DP caliper, a Shimano SG 53t chainring (that I needed to refurb a DA 7400 crank), and a pair of bull horn brake levers.
A good day indeed.

nice day indeed.

My thrifty brother snagged these on local trash pickup day for me. A Fuji Sports 10 (in my size) and an older Cro-Mo Mongoose Threshold that was made in Taiwan. Unfortunately this time around theres no joke about it... The fork IS bent. I think I have one I can swap out, but it'll have a mismached brake. I'm going to have to check with a friends junk pile before I do that.

Did I mention the Fuji is in my size?

Also, check this out. I finally own something that says 'Paramount' on it ;p

Speaking of awesome moms, mine picked up this beautiful little Fuji at a garage sale today for $10.00!!

And, one of the guys I work with brought me this one yesterday, a 1979 Record Ace in really pretty nice shape.

WNG - that Super LeTour has loads of potential, great score even with the frankenbike factor!

Yeah, it's a cool little frame. I have parts and wheels off an 86 Prelude that I can raid. It'll be a drop bar bike again!

Just look at the codes on them. You don't have to take them off the bike, just show the bike shop and they can order the recall parts from Shimano. You don't have to do any work.

Thanks this is more simple than I expected.

I just changed one of these cranks out at work. Not for breakage, but something equally as dangerous. The ramps on the chainrings formed barbs over time, which grabbed the chain and pulled it up into the BB. I filed them down, but he was still having trouble with it. Sounds like it was just a horrible crankset all the way around(no pun intended, lol!),,,,BD

On a side note. I think I have a set of those transplanted onto my old Marin Team. They will be trashed before the next ride!!

nice Ironman tashi.. very popular bikes around this forum :) too bad it's too small for you.. it's just my size

I knew this bike would be appreciated. It's a tricky situation: due to the damage as a complete bike it's not worth enough to bother shipping to someone, I don't think that I'd be comfortable selling it to a stranger locally, and it really doesn't fit me. It's just too big.

I think I may either strip it for parts, and give away the frame and fork locally to someone who is aware of the risk or put some upright/riser bars on it to reduce the reach and use it as a fast townie. But I really don't need another townie, and I'm out of room in the bike shed.

Sigh. Too many bikes, such a nice problem to have. Maybe I'll just have to try a stupid-short stem on it and see if that makes it fit. Pedaling geometry is good, I just have to get the reach back another 20mm. It's just that a 70/80mm stem on a 58cm bike will look so silly!

Oh well, it'll be loaned out for a bit to a friend who's bike was stolen so I don't have to decide for a bit longer...

Underside of the down tube, a ripple can be felt in the tubing about 5cm back from the lug point as well:

Top of the down tube:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2454/...ab67b7ec_z.jpg

The top of the top tube has some paint cracking just behind the lug point, bottom of the top tube has no visible damage.

I remember when my buddy got into this accident - him and another friend of mine were riding pretty hard, drafting each other, passed by a mega babe, both of them scoped her out and WHAM! They're both on the ground.

My friend who owned this bike at the time never got into riding again...

It is a good problem sometimes. Let us know what you decide to do. ;)

Thanks for that link, I was unaware of the recall. I have a set of those in my possession on a bike I bought to flip and then the peddle hole stripped out rendering the crank useless. Now I can get it replaced. :D

Found in the trash yesterday.

ok... not really. As found except for the tires, uncleaned. Full Zeus but seat post was tossed at some point in the bike's life.

I LOVE GARAGE SALES!!!!

My GF and I decided to go garage sale shopping this morning..And on the second stop...

Inside the front corner of the garage I spied a set of wheels, and they had oil port covers in the middle of the hubs... Then I see a crank, and a set of bars and under it all, a frame. Yes it was a pile of parts.. Then I spot the word fuji, and see only chromed drops and fork crown. All the top tube cable guide clamps slid to the back.. Fuji on the seat tube, and I automatically go to the top tube for the model name.. "The Ace" is what it said. 2nd gen Dura ace brakes and cranks, Nitto Universiade and Pearl9 stem. It's all there but the derailleurs, and I have those, hehe.. The best part, right about the time I added up the parts, I see the price tag...

ONE DOLLAR!,,,,BD

Oh yeah, my size too:D

Until I can get a pic...

Went to a local town-wide garage sale this morning and, at one of our last stops, asked if they had any bikes and he said, "well there's an old Motobecane in the garage" YES! Came home with an unknown yr, 23" Motobecane Nomade, low level Shimano 6spd, in blue. It's complete but needs a ton of TLC. Already have it stripped down to the frame and I'm contemplating going singe speed with it. Who knows. Anyway, I'm pumped! Pics when I decide to put it back together. :D

I knew a guy who found a car the same way. It was just missing the keys. :innocent:

On second thought, sounds like a divorce case. Maybe you should check out to see who threw it out...she might be looking for a friend to talk to :D

A bad before pic to be sure, but then I don't have a back yard anymore. Taking pics outdoors involves driving somewhere else these days.,,,,BD

I PROMISE the after pics will be WAY better:D

Seem to be having trouble loading pics........

I went to a youth services bicycle auction today and picked up a '91 Schwinn Sierra MTB upgraded with and awesome vintage Race Face triple crankset, frame is in great shape as well. A Trek Aluminum 1100 that needs some clean up and new tires. A Raleigh Pursuit and a Sekai 2700...........Frame decal on the Sekai says Tange Double Butted High Tension Tubing Throughout (double butted hi-ten...is that normal?) It's outfitted with Suntour Cyclone Black, the coveted 165 Sugino cranks, Mikashima Unique pedals, SR forged stem, Sekai Deluxe suede saddle and Suntour GS drops.

Thanks for the posting! Apparently my browser (and computer) are too old for certain things to work. The links on the
flicker page only work as far as uploading and viewing. Some "buttons" just do not work at all. Like on ebay, I cannot enlarge pics. Kind of sucks, but someday I plan to have another dual core Mac like I had in Houston.,,,,BD

What coveted Sugino cranks? What are you doing with the Sekai?

r0ckh0und 05-22-11 04:59 AM

The Sugino 165s or other brands I guess are popular with the fixed crowd. Shorter cranks help to reduce/eliminate pedal strike when cornering. I'm not really sure what I'm ging to do with it. Wheels are in reasonably good shape, I'll probably overhaul it, replace tires, tubes and barwrap, bent bars need replacing, new grease in the bearings, etc., then flip it. It is my size but I have more bikes than I can shake a stick at right now.

frantik 05-22-11 05:40 AM

oh the 165 is the length, not the model #..
