I picked up a Motobecane Grand Touring bike today. The guy I bought it from said his moving so he was cleaning house. He had a dumpster out front and was loading it up. It set me back $20. I wiped off some of the dust and grime that accumulated from many years of hanging in his garage. It is in excellent condition. It has Sachs/Huret derailleurs and shifters, Stronglight crankset and Vitus 888 steel. It is a bit small for me so once it gets cleaned up it will be sold. It is nothing special but well worth the $20 I spent on it.

I am working on a Moto GT at work right now. The same components, cranks, and color. Doesn't have the car emblems on it though, and the decals are different. Yours and the one I am fixing are probably one year apart possibly?,,,,BD
|
What year is yours? The guy I bought it from said he thought it was a '90. I am thinking mid '80s but I haven't started trying to figure it out yet.

I bought this last Saturday for $6! It's already done up with new tires and cables, and rides like a true gentleman's bike. The French bottom bracket has had a thorough cleaning and is repacked with marine grease. Not a hint of excessive wear. Sigh of relief already breathed, hehe.,,,,BD
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4baffad3.jpg As it sits now, but add a drilled ring Sugino crankset (Nishiki International contribution) I also cleaned up the chrome on the forks and rear rack. It's getting there, but not done yet. Too bad it doesn't need a repaint. Canti studs would be the PERFECT addition. I am not a big fan of the color really, but it's mostly because the bright orange and yellow decals. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...pscf946e99.jpg |
is it the pic or just my eyes, cause the fork looks a little........
but nice pick up either way, i've done alot worse with $6 |
^So what is the model and year of the pug? I can't seem to find it in the 1984, 1985, or any other of the online catalogs. None seem to match the chrome fork! Is it poss. the fork is a replacement?
|
I think it's pre 84? I believe it's a trick of shadow, or the bent fender, looks dead on straight sitting here looking at it. The fork had a Peugeot decal on it, until the cleaning made it disappear with a single swipe. Whether or not it's a replacement, it looks period correct and was Peugeot branded. Even has the carbolite fork giveaway seam on the backs of the legs.,,,,BD
Oh, it's a PH8, forgot to mention that before. Paper tag says so. |
The first pic is how it looks in person, and it was taken with my cell phone. I believe my old Nikon digital camera is playing tricks on the second pic. Even the bricks seem to curve upwards towards the middle.,,,,BD

This was actually sitting on the local CL for a few days and I passed over the ad initially. I looked at the ad again a couple of days later and was like "wait, it that a chainstay U-brake? That is a really early Merlin." I emailed the seller guessing it was probably already sold, but surprisingly got a response.
Took a look at it this weekend. Seller was the original owner, a roadie who decided to get rid of his one MTB that he previously used as a commuter. Wiped the dirt off the dropout and the serial number 372 appeared. Checked the date codes on the remaining original Shimano parts, mid-1987. I might actually configure it as my main city bike despite its rarity. It fits really well, the Ti is really comfortable due to its flex, no paint chipping or rust to worry about, and the chainstay U-brake pretty much rules out off road duty in the muddy NW. So far, I'm liking more than any other vintage MTB in my collection. This is it "as found" with about a dozen stickers and a few generic parts on it. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=313534 |
Only thing better then Cheap, is FREE. Found this one on my morning ride and went back to find it still there.

This weekend I picked up a nice condition Surly Karate Monkey, frame paint was in good condition it looks like it may have seen water from Sandy, I cant really tell for sure but I got it from a really nice building that sits on the water. In anycase I will treat the frame and build it for my daughter.
It was amazingly light a 16" frame in really good condition decent parts I have to make sure it wasnt stolen or washed up in the hurricane under saddle was full of dry dirt so it could mean it was tire spatter also not much rusting anywhere else except for stem bolts. She asked $100, I paid much less, it was missing a wheel. I'm guessing M8 means 2008, Surely Surly wasn't making 29ers in 1998. It came with a Brook 17 saddle which cleaned up nicely even though one side seemed a little uplifted. It also had red Chris King Head set Shimmano hollow tech deore cranks and SLX shifters with Deore\SLX rear and front deraileurs respectively. V brakes but had all fittings for disc even the wheel. I will add some pics tonight defintely not vintage but saved from the dump. I think she was getting evicted. |

I would definitely assume that a theft has occurred somewhere between the original owner who paid a LOT of money for this bike and this owner you purchased it from so that the value of this bike was unknown. Either that or the current owner wanted to get a known "hot" property out of their hands. A missing wheel only makes this fact more certain. |

Obviously not the original owner and has not clue how much it originally cost just six short years ago.
Oh no my good sir, she knew the value, when I offered her much less she said the saddle alone was worth $120 because she bought it for her ex. She might have been lying so, I said why are you selling it she says it was her ex he moved out of NY, I thought the guy she was with was the boyfriend but she said he was a neighbor and was just out walking his dog so she used his phone to call me. He kept staring at me, when she came back with the bike and he heard what she was asking he also wanted to buy the bike. The building security guard was there as well so he knew the bike was either hers or her boyfriend as she had to get it out of storage. I just said OK, she didnt say anything about the Chris King headset but even her ad she states the bike is worth $2000. She had no pics or mention of the saddle, I was hoping it was a Pugsley she said in her emails to me it had big wheels but she meant 29er while I fantasized big as fat (pugsley, moonlander). So after picking up a friend at the airport I went to see the bike. I thought about it she was obviously strapped for cash, or down on her luck as she kept emailing me and would call me from random numbers. It was a really nice building, security, doorman the whole shebang maybe she added the cost plus upgrades to come up with $2000 she was close if you consider saddle, upgraded cranks, plus NY sales tax on top of a $1599 bike. As I said she claimed it was the boyfriend. At first I wasnt interested, after she said she had no phone to send a camera pic, but she sent me many emails asking me to come, I kept thinking tolls to Staten Island, for a bike unseeen?? As I was going to be in queens JFK I decided to take a chance. It seems I as I may have been the only person that responded. Or the first she kept saying she would hold it for me. See the add for yourself, Would you have wanted the bike or would have gone if the person said they lost their phone and couldnt send pics. I was suspicious too, I ran a search of the serial number to see if the bike was stolen. Maybe the building storage room got flooded who knows, I know Staten Island was hit hard and she was right on the water. The ads below judge for yourself most stolen bikes are missing which wheel? Exactly!!! Then take a guess which wheel it came with. It also did'nt have a chain. Also my wife is in law enforcement, so she always tell me where to go to check out serial numbers she did property for 8 years she knows. Sounds like a variation on the story where the Jerk tells his X to sell his expensive Porche/BMW/Corvette/******mobile and send the money to his new address. So she sells it to some dude at her garage sale for $100 along with all his other stuff for pennies on the dollar just for spite.
Of course this is an Urban Legend... |

I had almost $2500 in parts, I gave away a $1500 super charger, brand new charcoal prelude mats, JDM spec tail lights, and a $700 Greddy exhaust to some kid I saw driving a prelude on the pkwy. I said slowed down rolled my windows down said "hey I had a car like that, you want some parts?". I could have put them on ebay or craiglists, well not sure if craiglist was around then but ebay I knew about because I bought parts from Japan on ebay. But I didnt want to be bothered. Anyway he said yes, I said "follow me". I went into my garage and gave him everything I found. A few weeks ago I found the Spoon Sports JDM front tower sway bars and a DC sports front and rear sway bar in similar electron blue color as my car. I also have a brand new factory body kit that I used for a month before I made my car JDM spec and upgraded to a JDM body kit. The guy said he couldnt afford to paint the kit to match his car so he did not want my factory kit which was blue as his car was red. When I see someone with an electron blue pearl prelude. I will give them those as well. That spoon bar is worth at least $500 on ebay. DC sports are probably $200 each. |

i agree whole thing sounds weird, especially with he seller accepting a much lower offer. i don't get why she would sell it for a low offer when the neighbor expressed interest at the price she was asking.
