This is an old post, but I feel it's relevant to today. I used to own this exact model, and a typical commute on that bike was 30 miles, approximately 15 each way. That Shimano transmission function perfectly, and I must have accumulated a total of 3,500 miles before selling it to a friend due to a move. Last I remember, that friend still has that bike, and has been riding it off and on for over 30 years. They might have been "entry level" back then, but they sure could last!

At the LBS to pick up a few things, sitting in the service area was a squarely 80s Peugeot roady. I'm acquainted with the techs and asked what it's story was. Turned out was donated as this shop will do a quick rehab and donate to a local in need. Turned out that local was me as I showed up at the right moment they wanted the space back. '84 p8, Sachs-Huret drivetrain, helicomatic rear, needs tires.

^Some believe that the Helicomatic is a very fine system. I've got one and it seems pretty good to me...others not so much!

I had a Helicomatic and it worked well most of the time. It has a hollow space on the tips of the cogs that my chain would get caught in. I would pedal and go nowhere. It did not happen often but just enough to piss me off and sell the bike.

Bikedued 07-29-14 05:13 AM

If you use the original Sedis chain they don't seem to do that. Something about the plate thickness or design? And yep I know exactly what you're talking about. It's dangerous in traffic, if you need to clear an intersection. I learned not to shift until after I had completely crossed over.,,,,BD

Lascauxcaveman 07-29-14 10:50 AM

^ I have the same problem from time to time on my Peugeot Vagabond as well, mostly on the larger cogs. I think it has the original chain (very low miles bike) but I'll check.

Rebuild the rear hub, and the love leaves quickly.

Develop an addiction to Natty Ice and you'll be home free! ;)

Just when I don't need or want any more bikes, I find these at can't leave prices. Trek 520 and Pro tour were found during a road trip and expedition this morning. Got a call from an old bike contact asking me if I wanted an old expedition for $120 bucks, how can you say no to that?

Triple wow!

^The granny gear on the Expedition might enable one to climb Everest! Nice score, dude!

@65er. I have 2 of those! One exactly like yours and a newer one with suspension. LOVE THEM!

I don't think the bikeE really needs a suspension as the ride is really quite nice... put it to work today and with a few more trips to the bottle depot I will have paid for the bike.

:)

I swapped the pedals and got the cockpit arranged to my liking as well...

Nice too that my Moulton and Bike E share the same size front wheel as it will only take a few minutes to swap in the Moulton's generator equipped wheel and light should I find I want / need that.

Came across this '86 Ross at a thrift shop in Door County for a song.
Rebuilt, including new Panaracer Paselas.
The first time I rode it I got whistled at.

the one with suspension is the RX model. Which, from my understanding is a light off-road model.

Man, that Ross is hot. Love the brakes on that one and the color. I also had to remove the decal adhesive from my chrome Mt. Hood, what a pain.

Bikedued 07-31-14 10:18 AM

Nice looking Ross!! If you want to lighten it up some, change the stem. They weigh as much as the frame almost;).,,,,BD

Kijiji find, this Norco Bigfoot with a cool splash paintjob for 25$. A lot of superficial rust, looks like it's been left outside a lot, but should clean up pretty well I think.

3speedslow 07-31-14 06:38 PM

Nice sized frame, Good fit ? What's the plans for it? What place did this bike have in the Norco line up ?

Replacing some steel with alloy parts might bring the weight down and get the rust out if you want to go that route.
