If you were carrying a set of tools, you could have left the saddle on the truck, hehe. GREAT find, the paint just SHINES!,,,,BD

My 6yo son has a 24" Giant MTB and a 20" Kuwahara BMX that is his racebike (he is not allowed to ride it on the street), so we needed to find him something for hacking around on and having a play in the local skate park.

$20 at the garbage tip shop scored this - looks like it's spent its life outside in the weather, but the bearings and drivetrain are as tight as a drum and it rides beautifully. Being a Giant, the frame is solidly made, and although the tyres are mis-matched the components are all pretty good. All I had to do was set the brakes up properly and lube everything and he's been thrashing it for weeks now with no issues at all. Score!

You can go almost as crazy as you want with the crank dept. There's actually a cartridge bearing Tioga BB for one piece cranks. I would get a three piece conversion kit though, and put a triple crank with a 48t big ring, and a front derailleur. With thumb shifters of course.,,,,BD

Went Craigslistin' again. Picked this up a lunchtime for a song. Lesson learned: don't get a new toy during lunch on one of the nicest days yet this spring. Productivity was at an all time low.

Now you are talking...me likely.

I know that no one here really cares about vintage BMX, but I just acquired this little gem yesterday for $40. 1984 Mongoose Californian. I am looking forward to a period correct build. Not 100% stock, cause that would be boring. Besides the only things original are the frame, fork, and possibly headset.,,,,BD

Yeah, BMX isn't really my thing, but that looks pretty nice. It would be fun to sit on it and watch ET.

+ 1, it is a nice score but craiglisting at lunch might be the "dumps" for your employer, but not for us.

Not True, have the trophies, the scars, and the memories to prove otherwise. I rode an '82 Torker, hard.
And for US$40, you scored, big time.

anixi 04-18-13 10:18 AM

^Nice score Dued! All I ever save from the dump are Next BMXes!

Gravity Aided 04-18-13 07:04 PM

Good BMX. Scored an old Mongoose myself a couple of years ago. Really nicely made bikes. Get ya some moto mag wheels for that.

XTR components? Nice... frame is nice too.

A customer offered me a late 80s Benotto for $50, that he said has been sitting in the sun. I went to check it out, and it was in decent shape, just a bit large (57-58cm). I take a 55cm.
It's a Benotto Triathlon. Not sure what the original gear was, but there are 105 brakes, and Light Action 6 speed derailleurs. Front wheel looks to be stock with a Benotto sticker, the rear is a Mavic MA40.
I think this is a Mexico-made Benotto. I don't know the history or specs to this model...it has oval shaped tubing for the downtube and seat tube.
But $50...can't go wrong.
