Yes the Alaska Icicle is an odd duck with the triple on front station, with over bb braze-on guides. The long chain must have have slap to to it. I'd have some more pictures but I've run out of town for the short being.

Now to the next point... the Mrs. how does that work out? a new tandem under wraps, yep. Well, It starts with a 'don't ask, don't tell'. Moves forward to a 'no go zone'. And then gradually I say things like 'yes I got a new bike at the sale, not that great. I just put it in the (no go zone) garage'. And all is well, as long as I can get creative with my stories, I mean storage all is well.

Credit for the first fat bike looking anything at all like today’s fat bike probably has to go to Steve Baker of Alaska’s Icicle Bicycles who first welded standard mountain-bike rims together and Roger Cowles, then a University of Alaska Anchorage student.

I've mentioned this one in the 3-speeds thread, a battered Raleigh Tourist that was in the discard pile outside the old co-op location after they moved the good stuff to a new location. It's rough, but some folks are interested in the bones so I dragged it home to check it out. Broken fork, rusted other stuff but a good frame and some parts, including a 40H Sturmey hub. It won't go to the dump.

Ohh!! If the chain case is decent-ish I would love to have it!

I regret to inform you that it is not, but your screen name certainly qualifies you to have it. Both the chaincase and the left fork blade suffered the most from exposure and are probably useless, the fork moreso for missing the lower half of that blade. The chaincase, by comparison, is only moderately ruined.

It's a nice relic but I don't really need more crap in the garage so if you can use this you may have it. I don't expect anyone would fight you for it.

That is a crusty critter. I think it’s too crusty for me. (shock! horror!!) Thank you for the offer.

Picked-up these freebies today. My love for NorCal mtb's continues with my first Santa Cruz. Heckler X from around 2000. Cannondale model I have no idea as it's tt is pretty scratched and the decals are gone. Probably one of the M models. Both seem to have upgrades here and there. Fork on the Cannondale is definitely not original. I think this came rigid. Girvin crank,XT rd. Santa Cruz has some Titec, Azonic, etc.etc. All suspension parts on both are moving but we'll see when I rebuild both. Garaged so I'm not too worried about anything seized.

Fished myself a 36H Campagnolo Record high flange hub today for $10 from the co-op. It has some odd OLD spacing (128mm), but that can be fixed with the removal of some extra washers. I'm a bit disappointed that it didn't come with a skewer, so I'll have to dig through their drawers another time. For now, it will serve as a handy paper weight until I find some use for it.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. I figure this is an M700 with a replaced fork which was a recall.

Pompiere 03-06-23 03:37 PM

I've had this bike for about a week now, but since I have learned more about it, I feel it belongs here. I found it in an antique shop in Alabama. It was inexpensive and in my size. The Campagnolo dropouts and Nervex lugs clued me in that this was probably something special. It's a late 1960s-early 1970s F.W, Evans. They were built and sold out of a shop in London. As it turns out, the frame is 531 tubing and was generally well regarded. It is a mystery how the bike ended up in Alabama. Someone on Facebook said he worked in the shop back then and they sold a lot of bikes to American tourists. After riding around the country, some people would sell them back to the shop, others would ship them home. This is my first British bike and my first 531 bike, so I am anxious to see if it upholds the reputation. The frame looks rough, but the seat post and stem came out with little drama and the rust is only superficial. I don't know what parts were original, so I'll probably start with the Sun Tour Vx derailleurs and Weinmann Vainqueur brakes and work from there. New decals are on the way. I'll put it together and get a few miles in before I decide on paint. I'm sure the shop was trying to keep the price down, so they didn't go for any fancy paint jobs. I think I want to do something to highlight the fancy lug work, either with lining or two-tone.

Welp, this mid-70s (i think) Holdsworth Mistral (I think it's a Mistral?) followed me home today for $20. 531 tubing and a mix of nice Sugino, Campy, Suntour, and Shimano parts. We'll see what gets salvaged and what becomes of the frameset--it could make a fun Eroica bike for my wife if the fit works out.

That is quite the mix of parts. I like the Crane (1st Gen Dura Ace) rear derailleur. Nice catch!

Not exactly saved from the dump, but I had the stars line up this time. A gentleman in the Raleigh Restoration group that I belong to put up the Raleigh Competition GS up as a "free to a good home" deal, and I just happened to be browsing the posts right after he had done so. He bought it new back in 1978, and says he hasn't ridden it since 1987, and that after so many years that he had to accept that he would likely never get around to bringing it back. The one stipulation he put on it is that whomever took it would need to bring it back to a roadworthy state. While it's a bit large for me, it's the perfect size to be the "guest bike" when my large son-in-law visits, and isn't so nice that I'd be really steamed if something happened while it's being ridden (the MK I Pro fits that description, and even that is a bit small for him).

Anyway, I told my wife about it and we made today a road trip to Cary, NC and back. Super-nice guy, and I could tell letting it go was difficult (I got the sense that his wife had been the catalyst for his decision). I'm definitely going to honor his condition, and I told him that if he's ever going to be in my area (an actual possibility), to let me know, and he can come and ride it, or just visit it. Mostly needs cleaning and servicing and replacing consumables, and hopefully not too much else.

A little OT…

Not a bike but thrilled when I pulled it out of a scrappers pile. He’s my neighbor so let me have it for free. A 60-70’s Hedlund 42 American sled.

I missed out on a 1975(ish) Motobecane Grand Record that someone posted for sale locally for $25, then decided not to sell when I contacted them about it...but lo and behold, this beauty was lurking near my folks' place when I visited this weekend:

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c33375d1f0.png

1975, 22" Moto Le Champion in silver lilac, basically all original except for the swapped out saddle, handlebars, & brake levers. Followed me home for $80. Dusty but it looks perfectly restorable; the paint & decals are all in very good condition, and the drivetrain just looks like it needs a good cleaning. I'll get some better pics of it up here when I get the chance, but it may be a couple of weeks before I can focus on this one.

Schwinn High Sierra

I picked up this '86 (I think) Schwinn High Sierra for $5 at a thrift shop on a recent trip to the coast. And it's in my size! The paint is in rough shape so I envision repainting it in the same root beer and brown color scheme, and recreating the decals for it. The chain and steel fasteners are rusty but the alloy bits seem to be in good shape (although I haven't tried to put them through their paces yet). It also has the quirky roller calipers on it that I'm looking forward to restoring. As long as everything is restorable/repairable, I think I'll keep the running gear stock and just modernize the consumables. There are some beautiful examples of these bikes here in the Forums that will no doubt be an inspiration on this project.

Great find, those roller cams and bear traps are pretty collectable.

zookster 03-21-23 11:16 AM

daywood I got a full set of High Sierra decals for my 87 from this Ebay seller. Have not used them yet, but they seem good quality. They look brown in this picture from the listing, but they are gold.
