A pretty nice box lot from an auction this week. A couple of brand new computers and decent Ritchie stems and a few bottles of Park citrus chain cleaner etc. I guess it was worth $6.

I guess the police dropped off all the bikes they couldn't auction off. Mostly walmart stuff. There was the mangled remains of something nice, "Kona" maybe that gave up some Deore 9 speed bits, I also got a few other random bits including a funky 700c 7 speed freewheel hybrid wheelset with radial spokes on the front wheel, and this frame that I left the realy rusty crusty parts of at the scrap yard. Thanks. The ATF/acetone mixture did three trick. I am replacing the steel wheels with some alloy ones in my stash. The rear wheel was pretty out-of-true, and several some nipples were rounded off. I had plenty of replacements, but the threading was different. I figured "why bother?"

Picked this one up out of a dumpster today a little neglected but fairly good shape complete Specialiazed early 2000's road bike fairly nice alloy frame with carbon fork and nicely working 8speed brifters. Gave it quick clean up pumped up the tires and light spry lube on a few parts oiled the chain. and minor adjustment. Took it for a short, ride and everything worked good will probably keep it for a while and fix it up a bit.

Saved this Free Spirit Sprinter or Eclipse can’t recall 5 years ago now. It started my whole bike restoration hobby.

One of my neighbers did not really surprised it had been sitting out in there yard for years. Out of interest I did a little research turns out it is 2012 Secteur Triple pretty much Specialized bottom end road bike model at the time retailed for around $800 basically ten years out of date when it was built that's why I thought it was older at first. These didn't age well value wise only $150 to $200 in excellent condition in most markets the value on bikes like these has really come down a lot recently ..There are a lot of them out there on the market that have barely been road seems the nicer models and cheaper stuff from this time frame got road to death while bikes like these often sat in garages unused till the come up for sale ten years later. Figure this one will need new consumables including a nice set of tires, pedals and chain to be a good rider or readily sellable close to $150 not counting labor so as found I would consider it to have little value money wise. With a little work it can still make a nice basic occasional rider for short training rides.

This 1974 Paramount P13-9 (version 2) followed me to my office today (SN D74101). It's obviously in need of restoration, but it was hard to say no for $60 and saving it from going to the dump:

some interesting parts: the Stronglight 93 crankset; a set of mid-70s (early 2nd gen) Phil Wood hubs; early shield/crest logo Cinelli Campione Del Mondo bar; what looks to be a very nice Specialized stem (EDIT: Specialized S-1, or a Nitto Pearl/NP in very nice condition). Probably a fully chromed fork; I'm not sure where the chrome ends on the stays. It'll definitely get a chemical-soak paint strip and rust bath, then I'll see what I want to do with it. Probably a respaced rear triangle, alignment, mask & fun repaint, and a rat-bike commuter build.

Since I have been wrenching bikes (and bamboo fly rods and vintage tobacco pipes) I have one adage: It does not matter what the monetary value of the thing is; it only matters what YOU, the buyer, gets out of it. That is a nice old bike that I'll bet still is a solid ride.

So I went to the Memory Lane swap in Bowling Green today. I wasn't looking to buy a bike, only for odds and ends for the various projects I have in progress. After checking all the booths twice, I had found a few things, none of which were on my list. After getting some lunch, my wife wanted to check out a nearby Goodwill store. That is where I found this:

It had just been put out today. For only $30, I figured it was a safe bet. I put some air in the tires and went for a quick ride in front of my house. There are a couple minor issues, but mostly it just needs some TLC.

OK, I get it that aficionados are sort of product snobs (myself included) but this is a real prize; the best of the Schwin product line for the time. What a shame that it had to tolerate abuse for so long. But good luck with the restoration and looking forward to the "after" photos!

Do the forks have remenents of 531 transfers?

Some of you may remember my halfhearted search for a red Worksop built '71 Grand Prix like the one I had in High School and my eventual abandonment because people wanted insane prices and let's face it they were actually not "great" bikes. Well, Marketplace got me again, this blue frameset popped up near me in my size advertised as a '72 and not insanely priced. It didn't have the pre-73 graphics, it wasn't red and according to the seller it was a Nottingham frame so 26tpi BB and headset but I didn't let that snap me to my senses so I hopped in the car and off I went. Paint has some scrapes and scratches but there's no significant rust anywhere, just some light speckling on the chrome socks, and it does shine up nicely. No dents and it appears to be pretty straight. What looks like massive scrapes on the driveside chainstay is actually a "RALEIGH" decal, well most of one anyway and there's a matching one on the other chainstay. I got it home and checked the SN and it is a May of 1974 Worksop built frame..... all 24tpi. :D I also got the GB stem and a set of generic aluminum drop bars with it. First order of business after getting it home was to get the fixed cup out of the BB shell and it was indeed FIXED but 72 hours soaking in Kroil, a drill hammer, cold chisel and some minor bloodshed later it is out. I think I'm just going to throw it together with the Suntour takeoffs from the '76 Super Course and a Pletcher rack like I had on my '71 and ride the crap out of it. Now that I have this maybe a righteously priced red '71 will finally find me.

There are a few fragments of the 531 decals. Additionally, the legs are lightly stamped "REYNOLDS 531 BUTTED" on the front, near the top. The steer tube is also stamped "REYNOLDS 531 BUTTED".

I stripped everything off the frame and gave it a bath today. When I tapped the frame with my wedding ring, each tube gave a nice ping that resonated throughout the frame.

I had watched this one for a while, but funds are tight. Then I finally fixed and sold a dumpster find townie bike yesterday, messaged this one’s seller and drove to the outskirts of town and snapped it up. 1993 Bianchi Eros with almost all of its original RX-100 bits (the rear wheel is a replacement Exage/Ukai unit) for $40. The cranks are my preferred 170mm even on a tiny 20.5-in frame. It’s too small for me, but the parts are destined for this road-worn Tim Neenan Lighthouse that has been kicking around for a couple of years now …

I have a daughter who's into bike touring, so I'm almost always keeping an eye out for framesets that will fit as she gets older. She's currently touring on a late-80s 45cm Terry Despatch that is rebuilt with a 650b/standard (507) 24" front wheel.

I just snagged this 51cm 1988 Terry Precision, built by Rob Stowe/Phase 3 Cycles in Rochester NY. The work is really high quality--it feels every bit a boutique frame, and has a nice sport/light-touring geometry. True Temper RC1 tubing, so roughly 9/6/9 butting and the headtube/fork/stays are the same as the lighter RCX tubeset; it's got Shimano SFR vertical dropouts. Really pretty Dupont Imron metallic cinnamon paint. Some nice 105, Deore, Deerhead/600 parts. I think it'll convert to a 650b light tourer with a lowrider front rack really well.

The early triathlon-focused GripShift bar end shifters are a hoot but not that useful, but I do like the Super Strap on the cages and I'll probably find a home for them elsewhere.

Saved this one from rotting in a junk pile. Early 90's Bridgestone MB-1 really rough and small frame with seized suspension fork and a couple of dings so likely won't be restoring or keeping it does have a nice mix of Deore XT and Richie components and nice Richie rimed wheelset with smooth Deore hubs. I can likely use nearly all the parts on other bikes I have good chance I will sell move the really nice Nitto 65 seat post and Nitto Richie branded long stem. Well here is the bike as found.

Did about an hour of clean up and got air in the tires and the gears breaks working took it for a short ride tp see what I have. Even with the messed up fork it actually rides really nice.
