I've "saved" a few free-on-Facebook bikes, though most have not been worth much more than parts. The actual good ones always seem to get snatched up within about 10 minutes. Still trying to get the bottom bracket off of an old Panasonic Sport that could be a decent bike....if I could ever get those gravelly bearings replaced. I've been wrestling with the bottom bracket off and on for about 6 months and doesn't seem to be very interested in coming off. Not very encouraging.
But last week I found an old 1991 (?) Specialized Hard Rock Cruz leaning against the dumpster. The chain and cassette were caked orange with rust and the gel-type comfort seat was cracked and oozing and generally looked unpleasant for sitting. And the thumb shifter for the front derailleur had a broken piece on top. But other than that, it didn't look too bad. Walked it home and scrubbed the chain and cassette and got them servicable, and the suntour shifters still work, though they're a bit hard to shift and probably need new cabling. But it's a really fun ride, if a bit small for me. |
Bridgestone 300
I'm a year late to post this but I found this at a moving sale for $10. 1984 Bridgestone 300, odometer said about 500 miles at the time but who knows if that was accurate.

Wow, that's quite a load! What's the leather strap near the bottom bracket for?

I now have a bike on either end of the commute so it's theoretically easier these days. |

Although not really on the way to the dump, it was clearly being ignored and neglected. Small (47cm) frame size 1982 Sequoia complete and original with the exception of the bars and brake levers. A bit of rust on some fasteners, but nothing that a quick dip in Evaporust won’t fix.

I have a black chrome 1987 High Sierra that I picked up last year. It is one of favorites, a really nice riding bike. So, when another '87 showed up on FB Marketplace today for $20, I didn't hesitate to go grab it. Equally as dirty and neglected as my first one, but appears to be in good shape overall.

Picked up this freebie Sirrus this morning after my ride. Pretty much my size so a keeper. I finally own a Specialized road bike. lol Looks pretty much all original and in that deep purple almst black color. Lots of plans for this project.

23" Novara Arriba was on top of the pile today. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it was unloaded, so what started the day as mint frame has numerous scratches and a forgivable dent on the top tube. For my purposes, I got a mostly complete Deore LX group and wheelset for $10.

spent a couple hours sorting through a fair ton of scrap after finding a bundle of spokes and a brake shoe on the top. This was on the bottom of the pile. |
Is that an old chain breaker tool?
|
It would have to be one heckofa chain! It is a cotter-pin press from the 1980's. Smiles, MH

Here's the salvaged Hardrock. It's a bit small for me, but the enormous rise on those bars makes it still feel comfortable.I've commuted to work a couple of times on the bike and it is a fun ride.
I like the Suntour Accushift shifters. It's my first experience with Suntour thumbies. They're a bit hard shifting toward the easier gears (and I suspect the hard shifting could be the source of the damage on the left shifter?) but new cables/housing might fix that. When shifting to higher gears they have a nice crisp feel and shift accurately, true to their name. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5fbf11fb5d.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e48fe8a108.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...00672b3fbb.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...6c18b95e4a.jpg |

I Found these with the cotter press. Its some sort of thread chaser with 16 different thread cutting options. It says OTC 7402. The cone on a stick is from some sort of tool. |

This stuff was there amidst a bunch cheap stripped aluminum frames and culled rims. I left a bunch of no name aero rims... The racks are Vetta and Jim Blackburn. |

Story please!
In any case, the Allez is nearly completely original (even original wheelset) and only really missing the left Shimano 600 lever and the front brake caliper. No biggie, will find those at the co-op. Stem seized, seatpost seized, crank dustcap seized and stripped. But it’s my size! Can’t call this whole thing a ‘labor of love’ without the ‘labor’ part. Honestly besides stuff being locked up I’m astounded at the condition. Little rust, worst paint is on the sides of the forks and on the front of them over the ‘Specialized’ stickers which protected the paint. There is one teeny tiny ding that I couldn’t even see until I sighted down the tube with my eye next to the frame. If I stared straight at the tube in the sun I still can’t see it. It can never beat the Huffy (of course) but will be fun to melt that seatpost out while I wait for a cotter press for the Ted Williams Sport Racer cranks. Got an idea for removing (and saving) that original Specialized stem, which is how I got the frozen stem out of my PX-10. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...dd67ed242.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...05c4e6d74.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...83db4f949.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b6d9d20d2.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a1f1c042f.jpeg |
