That'll help you crack those stubborn freewheels free! Very cool!

I went curbside shopping last night. They are open late and the price is always right. A neighbor must have been cleaning out their garage and backyard. They accumulated quite a collection of bikes. Mostly Murray's and Huffy's, a couple of low end, modern Schwinn's,and a Mongoose from after Mongoose was cool. 12 bikes were in this pile. I rearranged the heap into this more orderly state in order to pick out the best bikes.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...321957c35e.jpg The Fuji has a nice looking 1020 straight gauge steel frame with a steel 3 piece crankset. Everyone here thinks Schwinn Ashtabula cranksets are heavy, and they are, but this crank might weigh more. This is all steel with a black plastic cover over the steel crank arms. Trek used a similar crank on the 700. I don't blame either of them for doing this. They are less expensive to make. Fuji, Trek and Giant are competing with Big Box store bikes. If they can get the price down closer to those bikes, then perhaps they can get people to buy better bikes. Anyway, back to our story. Here is the Fuji... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...3bd3393192.jpg The Haro might be a parts donor for the Fuji. I'll know better when I can view these new finds in daylight. . https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e05b663ae9.jpg I don't think that the 4 arm crank on the Haro would look right on the Fuji though. |
"massive" catch of the day yesterday at at BTD warehouse sale, $30
I may, probably will never use this 16.5L monstrosity to its potential but I need a bigger bag than the one I now carry and this may work. It was cheap enough so if I get any use out of it, it will be well worth it, or not. ;) This should come in handy for picking up larger items without having to deploy a packable knapsack like I do now. Its pretty dang cool and got great reviews, the velcro straps are messed up a bit and I will fix them but may use this with a rack so it won't need the frame mounting and it can be removed from the bag. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...35706a02e7.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a760308e4c.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...198775d5c1.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4f7a09e8f8.jpg |
Vise
The vise is a great acquisition. Wilton is one of the few Names in vises.

An Ebay find not a dump save and hopefully my only "catch" for 2024, I'm trying to cut back LOL. Near as I've been able to determine thanks to all the knowlegeable folks here it is a 1974 Falcon Olympic Model 78. Straight gauge Reymolds 531 main triangle with Campagnolo 310/311 stamped rear dropouts. Paint job is horrible, the plan is to throw some parts at it for now and ride it. If I like it I'll strip it, give it a proper paint job and build it up with decent components.

Not too shabby for $20. The bolts are rattling around in the base. I'll loctite the pivot bolt when I put it back together.

Gifted from a friend who found it at his local dump. I’d like to put some canti brakes on it. 700c wheels I think are original, I’ve heard that if it had been a wheel conversion from 27” to 700c it gets tricky. Any and all help/advice is welcome.

Super find. Romic was a fairly prolific custom frame builder in Houston. Old pal did some research years back and created this web article (note, not an HTTPS secure site, so at your own peril - I opened it and it has what I remembered).
Newer canti calipers may be difficult to fit, but many have vertical slots that may accommodate a 700c to 27" distance. Given this is a touring model, may have been built for 27" wheels. Nah, dive right in, especially if you happen to have the other set of wheels you might need, none of this is life threatening and you can always use extra parts to suss out ones just like this with less drama. Make it so. ;) |
I'm curious what that single threaded boss on the underneath of the downtube is for, anyone know?? Generator?
What a great bike, I'd have that stripped down and built up right so fast.. |

What a great bike, I'd have that stripped down and built up right so fast.. photo #4 shows a mile of space above the wheel, I’m sure that’s for fender space but it looks more than just that leading me to believe it came with 27” wheels and 1-1/4 tires thanks for your interest |
Picked up a 1987 Diamondback Apex. Nothing special model wise, but came with some nice parts, most notably the nearly NOS Suntour XC II pedals. And I am a sucker for thumb shifters.
In my town, I am the only buyer of vintage MTBs. Over the last year, it's all I have bought. If I needed another one, I would refresh for personal use. But I have that covered. Refreshing for the local market means I would lose $100 on it, and buyer would likely part it out. So I will save that additional step and part out myself. I did need the cartridge bearing wheels (sort of). https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ec0995dc59.jpg |

there are two bosses there. Curious, tell me what you’d build it up with, I could use some help. I think it had a 27” wheelset, clearly cantilever brakes, bar end shifters? Seems it came stock with 105 components, even the hubs are 105, and it has Campagnolo Gamma Oxide Strada rims.
