Wheels are 700c Araya double walled / eyeletted and the tyres are 700:35 Schwalbe CX Compes.

Stopped downtown and when I came back to the bike had a bunch messengers gathered around admiring the new rig and they had already figured it was one of my builds.

Someone emailed me and said she could give me two bikes, following her garage sale. She said, "Nothing special." As I was driving to her house, I was thinking, "What might I find? A Huffy? A Masi?"

This specimen was in the middle of Huffy and Masi, but I'm glad to have snagged it. The other is a generic kids' BMX bike, which I also accepted.

This girl seems to be very underused. Her owner is a rabbi's widow who lives on a gigantic hill, and perhaps she's realized she isn't going to be riding any more.

I used to be one of the 25 so know the guys really well and am often doing work on their rides... often at a discount... and often on an emergency basis.

Also - I just got an Atala and info is minimal on the internet - sadly it has no campy (my 1st Italian bike and no campy - outrage!) the rear derailer is a Suntour Vx, the front a Gian Robert. looks kinda low-end but the lugs are pretty sweet. any ideas where to find serial number databases or other info?

This may or may not help. I ran into a similar issue trying to find info on my Atala recently (mind did have a few bits of Campy but nothing special).

Hi mkeller234 !

You must be sharper than a TACK because you called that exactly right - it IS a Sakae Crank and it IS a Light Action DR, and it does make for a very nice ride.

Hah, I am just familiar with the setup is all. I think the freewheel on mine is a suntour, this is one of the better shifting bikes that I have:

It had been languishing in someone's backyard for years
its amazing what a good scrub, wax, fingernail polish (in the correct color), tin foil, steel wool, and Barkeeper's friend can do. (one another note - my hands will never be the same)
I also had to rebuild the rear wheel with a new rim - so its not completely original.

Sixty Fiver, you're right that I've been doing well lately, finding nice bikes, but I'm still sticking to nice LOW end bikes, largely out of fear of dealing in the high end. I'm afraid of acquiring bikes and not being able to sell them. Lots of guys here say the high end is where to be, and I may yet discover that.

Currently, word gets around town about me, and people bring me bikes or tell me where to pick them up. They're happy to help, because it puts bikes back into use.

We're starting a bicycle coalition here now. The first official meeting will be Oct 28. The first unofficial meeting was at my kitchen table. I want to promote cycling here, for fun and utility.

When I was in Jr. High, the "lucky" kids had bikes like that. I wanted one badly. Fat back tire - but not a slick, skinny "english racer" type tire in front, and 5 or 10 speeds. Usu. they were lime green or orange.

I don't want one anymore, however.

Oh, jeez, I have to admit I had one almost like it in middle school, but mine was a 5 speed. I was really hoping for something like a Continental, a U08 or maybe even a Raleigh Grand Prix, but my parents bought identical Sears "Purple Piles" for my brother & me for Christmas. I think we broke & replaced almost every part on them before we were through.

Here are a couple of pictures, I thought they would be better than they are. Its been raining outside so not been able to get it out in the sun.

I'm pretty sure thats not the original saddle, maybe I'm wrong. It has me curious if its notbecause it says Marco- Made in Italy. Anybody heard of this?
