Hey Guys,

So I'm looking to buy my first road bike and it seems as if the older the cheaper I can find them. However, I have a complete lack of knowledge beyond the brand as to how to measure quality. I'm looking at buying this one, can anyone tell me if its decent?

According to my buddy the ladies is 1938 so if thats right this one aint far away, theres no date stamp on these ones showing the date on hubs

Picked up a Fuji Sagres with quad butted Valite tubing frame. It is solid, but needs some typical clean up. Has Suntour alpha 5000 indexed shifting. Notice that the turned up drop bars had the brake levers moved and then the bars were taped. Done by the owner's father to use as at a campsite and not for the normal 'dui' reasoning.

Quad butted? First time I'd heard of that. Must be pretty light then?

Naww.. the opposite, Ive ridden a quad butted frame and its just awful, I'd go as far as calling it plain gauge with a touch of thinning some of the tubing away around the middle, one of the most pointless "features" there could be.

My Fuji America Touring Series V is also quad butted, but I hadn't seen that sticker on any thing else. It must be a Fuji thing.

I just got home from picking up this Miyata 710 via the local Craigslist.

Kind of a funny thing about this little score. I had spotted the post late last week. The price was around $270. It was a little much for me at the time and the ad was very non-discript. It did say it was 59CM, had Suntour components and Shimano brakes. Another thing that turned me off there was no telling just how original it was, so I didn't pay much attention.

A couple days go by and I do my usual keyword search on CL. "Univega", "Centurion", "Fuji", "Miyata" and there it is again. Only this time $260. Then on Monday, $230. Tonight I checked again. The post was updated yesterday, it says "Miyata 210, for $210". Ok I thought, I know the model now. So I did some research. I see it's quite a step up from the humble Univega Custom Maxima I picked up earlier, and a more appropriate size. So I call and it's still available. Ask the usual questions about rust, dents, his history with the bike, etc. He did say he put a new derailleur on it "..'cause you know...it was gettin' old." I go check it out.

The seller is a nice guy, younger, and if I had to stereotype him, he may smoke a little green in order to feel connected with Mother Earth in order to save the World one co-op farm at a time. I'm not judging mind you, just giving you a visual; beard and all. Anyway, he just hands it over and says "take 'er for a spin!" So I step out side and give it a look over before hoping on. I notice some painted script on the drive-side chainstay. It reads Seven Ten 710. Oh snap! I check the brakes...Dia Compe! HAHAHA! The FrDr is a Suntour Vx and the RrDr is Sountour V-GT LUXE. Frame is Tange Champion Double-Butted. The serial# begins with "I" so I believe that puts it at a 1980 model.

I tried to talk him down to a round $200 'cause the front wheel is out of true, but I gotta hand it to him he held firm for that last $10. More pics to come soon!

Ishiwata quad butted tubes came in several tubesets... my friend has a Kuwahara Club Sport road bike that curbs in at under 21 pounds (lighter tubeset) with a Shimano 600 group and my Kuwahara Cascade has the heavier quad butted tube set but it's still a fairly light bike that rides wonderfully.

Ride quality has so much more to do with geometry and other factors like wheels and tyres and in this Kuwahara made a very nice bicycle.

Peugeot / Mafac also offered top adjusters on their brakes.

I don't know if it is all marketing hype. The bike weight feels reasonable and in the really really short ride I took with the awful flipped up bars and mis-adjusted brakes, it felt pretty good. Once I check the bike over and can take it for a proper ride I will see how accurate that first impression was.

Last year I picked up my first vintage bike, a '69 Schwinn Twinn. I've picked up a few since, and talked about them at work. A co-worker mentioned that he still had the '67 Deluxe Typhoon that he got on his 14th birthday in March of 1967. He quit riding it when he got his drivers license, but had held on to it. I kept telling him to clean it up and throw a new set of tires on it so that we could ride. He gave up and decided to give it to me to clean up and enjoy.

Time to start learning how to take these apart, clean and lube, and put them back togather.

My 84 Club Fuji is quad butted 1769(whatever that means) It came with Suntour ARX, which I upgraded to Cyclone M-II. Original wheels were pretty trashed so I put on a set of 600 hubs with Mavic rims. The ride is quite nice! It also feels quite a bit stiffer than some of my other steel bikes when out of the saddle. I think you might be confusing quad butted with something else? I don't think they'd put it on a bike that went for $360 in 1984, if it was crap which rode awfully, lol.,,,,BD

Looks closely at the app. weight at the bottom. 23 pounds :D

Here's a little Univega Maxima Sport I picked up two weeks ago. Nice bike that needed a little of everything, too much stuff to list really. Turned out nice after a clean up and polish. And the SIS indexed shifting works well after replacing the cables and housings.

Here is a bike I picked up a few weeks back and never posted. It is a nice Centurion Lemans with SIS down tube shifters, butted Tange 2 frame and Shimano Light Action RD. Only downside is a very small ding in the top tube that looks like the typical something from the garage dropping on it.

It looks to have not been ridden very much (no surprise as the handle bars were set up low and aggressive and the tires were 700x18's and owner was not a young man). It now sports a set of 700x28 Panaracer Pasela TG tires and it has a comfy/sporty ride.

Found this Kabuki at an estate sale. It's in really good condition. All Suntour/SR with like new Panaracer Paelas. Came with a funky blue Cannondale handlebar bag that included the owner's manual complete with date of purchase (3-26-84) and owner's name. Having fun riding it. Not sure about the GrabOn grip stuff on the bars.

The Bianchi Super (Japanese) was picked up off of CL. The Centurion Accordo was a thrift store find. I am going to rebuild them both for my wife, and see which one she likes better. I will probably get rid of the other one, because unlike me she sees no need for more than one bike.

A little different from what I normally buy, but cool none the less. Roadmaster Aero Bee Renegade muscle bike. One of six bikes picked up while garage sale shopping today. I love that the front tire says 'Sport tire, Fast One'. Hope to take some pictures of the other bikes and post them tomorrow.
