Picked up this Ross today from a CL ad......Frame is Ishiwata 024 with forged drops and full Shimano 600 Arabesque including a triple up front for $75. The paint is good, derailluers shift nice, wheels are straight and spin nice. I bought this with intentions of parting it out due to the frame size but am hesitant now because it is a petty sweet complete bike.

A few days ago, a good friend picked up an older Specialized Cross Roads at a thrift shop. It's in really good shape, good paint, 700C rubber, good seat, very light surface rust on things like the seatpost. Tange CroMo tubing, and not very heavy. None of the 21 speeds would shift. He paid $10.
This morning, I adjusted all the shifty bits, and the brakes, fit the seat and bars to him, and all is good. Someone had adjusted the Low and Hi speed limit screws all the way in, and the front DR was just all gummed up, and stuck. WD-40 got stuff moving again, and revealed no looseness in any joints, anywhere. I also told him to give it a good washing, with soap, and to bring it over for fresh lubrication, and final adjustment, of all the movable stuff. Lookin for him later this afternoon. I told him to sell all his other junk, and keep this one. He was going to flip it for $20-40, at a garage sale. The rest of his stable, about 5 bikes, is all super low end big box stuff. All of the rest of them, together, aren't worth half of what this one is worth. I have convinced him that this one is the "treasure" that he has been looking for, for the past 10 years. It's a nice riding bike, and fits him well. He now says that this is the nicest riding bike he has ever ridden....... Nice find! Now, I might be able to drag him out for a ride with me..... |

That there looks like a Worksman trike. That thing will be here long after the end of the world. I have chopped a few of them to make nutty wheeled vehicles... those wheels will hold an elephant. Don't try riding it up steep hills though... |
It is a worksman and it's no fun on hills and it's really fun to ride lol, also I'm thinking about making it a 3 speed, I think the second trike was a 3 speed, not sure if the hub will be able to handle this giant...

Schwinn Collegiate found at a garage sale in New Holland Illinois over the weekend. Asked the owner how much, and was told $10. I didn't haggle. Pumped up the tires, raised the seat, and took it on the bus to work today. It needs new cables and brake pads, some degreasing/cleaning, and steel wool on the chrome bits. My son is going to do the work, and it will be his appropriately named bike for his freshman year of college in the fall.

Certainly not high end, and the welds look like a 6 year old did them (probably did anyhow), but it's sturdy and in great shape! I can fit two of me in the seat, but probably only one larger person. The grips say "Peacock" but that's the only English on it. Can anyone read the rest? I already swaped out the cheap 36t crank for a square taper crankset with a high quality 32t ring (in pictures) I had sitting around. The front brake is a rod brake, and the rear is a ban drum brake. Should do fine on the flats. 24" tires. The headset was a complete basket case. The crown race was not ever installed, but it was placed over the bearings on the top, and then the top race was on top of that. Mrs. TIOS has kindly provided some basic traslations from the Simplified Chinese script shown. The blue decal on the tire = Hang Tung Tire Co. The tire script = Maximum Capacity Weight Load 80 KG / Relative Pressure 350 kPa Seat = Nan Yang Xin Tai which translates into English as South Ocean. Probably a brand / company name. All translations are approximate! |
K8drums, that bike will be hard to identify. Those components are not likely to have come together originally on a bike. The bike was pieced together at least once. And the shoddy work done on it might obscure things even more.
The derailleur hanger's threads look stripped, though you may be able to salvage them. I suspect the frame is going to give you a lot of surprises, so to speak. If the fixed cup was in on the wrong side, the threads may be ruined. There are probably remedies to that, but your work may exceed the value of a replacement frame. Just a warning. |

Answering for Iowegian, in case he's not coming back for a while...
Once you get the stem out, screw the headset locknut off. Examine the steerer tube. Is it flat on one side, or is there a vertical slot in it? If the former, there's a good chance it's a French frame. French cranksets were common on many non-French bikes, especially English bikes. England didn't make many bike parts, except Raleigh, and those parts were only installed on Raleighs. 35x1 means the bottom bracket cups are 35 mm in diameter and have 1mm pitch threads (1mm between each thread). French bikes used stems with a 22mm diameter stem. Most other bikes use stems of 22.2mm. Yes, really, a 0.2m (1/5mm) difference. A vernier caliper is a good tool for these measurements. Mine goes down to 0.1mm. And yes, RHT stands for right-hand-thread, so it means righty tighty. Lots of jargon to learn, huh!? |
well stem is still stuck but I unscrewed the headset and it revealed a notch, not a flat spot...But the BB is RHT on both sides. I need to invest in some calipers (but I just got the truing stand today and it was pricey) Also someone said the derailer hanger might be stripped - its not so thats good i guess
