Is that rusty or dirty?

Krov9 06-10-21 02:00 PM

I bought two bikes today - the first was not that great of a deal, a '89 Schwinn Impact that was in a worse shape than I had expected. Should've tried to haggle down the price, ended up costing 70 € plus a 4.10 € train ticket.

Then I went to pick up a used Selle Italia suede saddle for 10 €, and the guy started offering some other stuff he had around. I snatched a small sun-bleached '91 Marin Muirwoods frameset for another 10 €
This pic is not mine but the paintjob is similar, just very dirty and sunbleached to white in many spots. Absolutely hideous, but I expect that those in the know would consider it a crime to paint over it ;)
I would appreciate info about what components these came with, and where to find a top cap for that quill stem (mine has it missing).
I think I'll build it up using the ugliest mostly period correct non-original parts I can find to match the appeal ;D

I was actually ogling at another Marin before I decided on the Schwinn, but it was too far away ;(

It's BOTH! It's also my second entry this year in the Clunker Challenge. I think I can get it up and running - and running well, at that - within the $100 budget. I honestly don't think it's ever been cleaned in its entire existence, but I hope to get most of the filth off of it soon. There is a surprising amount of rust in odd places. This is the first time I've ever encountered a rear brake cable housing that has bonded itself to the inside of the cable tunnel on the top tube - fortunately, I was eventually able to separate the two.

NICE nitto cage and I love the Obenauf's. Way good leather treatment.
Cheers!

Not so fast and I will probably get shouted down on this but I have used "the" wrench to loosen a couple of new ones just a bit to speed up break in time, tighten them back up as soon as it starts or before if my backside gets onboard sooner which it usually does.

I have at least 15-20 Brooks of every state, NOS, well broken in, old and not broken in, and many in between, Pro's, Team's, B-17's, B-17 Specials, an Imperial and a couple or 3 Cambium's

To be honest, I have very little trouble with them, height, tilt and adjustment have more to do with it than anything. On hot, cold, long rides I some times use a cover for extra slip or cushion depending on the current state out back.

In other words, I have never met a Brooks I didn't like, ymmv. ;)

I have used my Brooks wrench primarily when repairing saddles; the first time when I added an auxiliary rivet behind the right front rivet, the second time when I replaced a broken cantle rivet. Both repairs required removing the nose bolt and the tool was invaluable for that.

Put the tool someplace out of the way where it’s not gonna get lost...if you have Brooks seats, someday you’ll need it...if you tighten the nut too much, you can also loosen it...I’ve only had to use my wrench once with all of my Brooks seats, bikes, past and present...you’ll know when it’s the right time to use it...

What the poop...Roller cams, Sun Tour ratchet thumbies, black bull moose bars and stem, the triple pulley rear derailleur AND A BELL!!!! That will clean up nicely.

Looks like they couldn't figure out that chain routing. Nice

Well done sir, well done! :thumb: This has to be one of the best actual "saves" in a long time. That is going to clean up very nicely and it still has the original Nishiki branded saddle to boot. Extra "pints" for that.

BikingViking793 06-12-21 05:59 AM

neat bike and nice save! Like to see that after cleanup.

I like the shoulder pad in the frame for carrying. I used those things a lot.

WOW what a score!!!! Great catch friend. Are those Nitto bull moose bars. Holy heck! A real save, as someone else said earlier. That deserves 3 emoticons:love: :thumb:

What’s the oldest truck you’ve seen at the dump?

Sometimes our '85 F250 diesel is the oldest truck at the dump.

That pale green '72-ish Ford longbed in the background with the built-in tool compartment is no slouch, in the old truck department.

AND the gold ano rims AND the portage strap with braze-ons. So if 3 check-boxes is a trifecta, 4 is a grand slam, what's 7?

I think it’s a 1990 or 1991 Bianchi Axis with Tange double butted “superset II” tube set. Appears to be bone stock and all original minus the tires. Sun Tour XCD/GPX components, 3x7 with the sweet command shifters inside the brake levers. Handlebar is bent but I have a plan to remedy that - visit the local bike collective!

I road around on this for 4 years. Had $90 in it including the Serfas Seca Tires that are not pictured on the bike. Sold for $180. Frame was way to small. Was a neat bike to look at.

Dont forget the mid fork braze-ons and dual eyelets at the dropouts!

There are no slouches in the old Ford truck department, they built this country and still are. ;)

Friday garage sales....

I was test riding the Raleigh ST with it's new triplizer when I saw the flourescent signs a block over. Found this absolute time capsule Impact Pro. While it's my size, it's geting a bearing repacks and a tune before flipping onto CL for at least a $100 profit.

^^^^ Those ca.1990 MOS Schwinns are da bomb. Look at that suspension-bridge-cable size brake cable.

Stick a fork in me, I'm done.......

.....buying bikes. No, really...

I picked up this 1973 Raleigh Competition this morning, pics are from the ad. I'd been watching it for quite awhile and watched the price coming down and offers to sell less wheels, etc. so yesterday on a whim I contacted the seller and asked if he would sell just the frame and fork as none of the components were original. He was more than happy to, in fact he said he had tried that first. Someone has cut the Huret derailleur hanger off but now I can put on a Campy style with no feelings of guilt. It has very good original paint, the Raleigh graphics are in good shape, the "Competition" graphics on the top tube are pretty well worn but it gives it that cool old worn look, the Carlton on the seat tube is a bit better and the Reynolds 531 decals are cracked with missing sections from age but are still recognizable. The chrome on the fork has a lot of wear in spots but no rust or pitting. The whole thing screams "survivor" and I love it! Plans are to replace the hacked off hanger, do minimal paint touch up and polish it it up then build it with period correct Campy NR. If I had to name a Grail bike it probably would have been a red 1971 Raleigh Competition or International. This is close enough. This doesn't change my plans for my other "Carlton" but for some of my other bikes yes. I foresee an almost total "turnover" in the road bike project lineup.

He was about 6'4" 350#. I told him to bring it by and I'd fix it. I guess the will was gone.
