I threw this in the truck really quickly because salvaging is against the rules!

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7cfc5dc18.jpeg

Too bad the frame is cracked! Still, some good parts and it’ll look great hanging on the wall.

Seems like that ^ should be looked at by a good frame builder to determine if it's really beyond repair. Shame to see a Steelman in the trash! Good on you for salvaging it!

Well, I had to muster all of my courage, but it was the right thing to do. I’ll be sure to have it checked out.

If they catch you tell them it's recycling, not salvaging...

unworthy1 07-07-21 06:32 PM

^Which it IS^...just not the recycling they make any profit on. Still, if some of these dumps could get just a little more flexible with their rules they could probably haul in more money selling "scrapped items" to salvagers than things like this cracked (but thoroughbred) frame to a scrap metal broker who will ship it to China in a bale.(and that's AFTER somebody separates the AL plastic and rubber from the steel so everything can be shredded and baled in the form China will pay for)

curbtender 07-07-21 06:57 PM

Where I worked the "salvaging" was contracted out. The owner of that company had a building that he stored items for resale. He had an affinity for bikes so what I couldn't "recycle" it was nice to be able to browse after work. Best save was a fuschia colored Ironman that a guy was about to throw in the tractor bucket. Had to ply him with a coke, lol.

Raised! Mechanism works perfectly! Gotta love Simple Green! Seat was a bit sticky being under some trees.

FB Marketplace find - a 1988 Specialized Sirrus, which is allegedly the same frame as the Allez but with 105 parts instead of 600. Asking price was $65, $50 got it into my truck - and it's even my size, and largely stock! Best of all, it's been hanging on a hook in a climate-controlled store room since 1999.

As found -

A chromoly BMX bar for an adult sized build using the 89 GT Karakoram frame. A non sus. fork which fit my 97 GT Avalanche frame perfectly and has mid point braze bolt holes. Aluminium and disc ready if I want to brake up my front. Lastly and need to get a pic of it, a nice Columbus thron chromoly stem, Chrome Pro model.

Total cost 10 clams.

An acquaintance wanted to get rid of this Diamond Back, so I accepted it. I've got to figure out what to do with it. I believe it is circa '95 or '96.
He also gave me a new 8sp chain and a Minora trainer with the front wheel riser block.

Interesting looking stem on it.

The '90s Trek 850 I've been seeing at the co-op was in the dumpster during today's visit and I just could not resist. Probably an exercise in futility since the front wheel and seat are missing and that's the easy part. This thing must have spent years in the weather, although it does not look too bad. Seat post is stuck so I have it soaking, BB so dry it was locked up so I poured some oil in and worked it loose. Rear hub was the same way. Tossed the locked-up plastic pedals. It's a 20" frame (full CroMo) but I already have the Marin that I found last year. Shame to get rid of it but I just don't need it and it needs too much for me to mess with it except out of boredom. Nice frameset if anyone wants it. Probably not worth shipping. Too bad I didn't grab it when I first saw it a year or so ago.

Not much for me but I did find a Gitane TdF fork for a loose Super Corsa frame in the stash.

Sakae I-Beam. I think it was one of those stems that lots of companies put their name on.

Monday I bought a Specialized Sirrus for $50 which I just finished reconditioning this morning, all in a rush to get in my 100 km before the Clunker Challenge deadline August 7.

Today I bought this 1989 Schwinn LeTour for $15. I’ll mothball it until next year’s challenge.

Somebody help me, I may have a problem!

Some poor bas...er, uh, one of our fellow enthusiasts has expressed interest in this bike and I've agreed to pack it off to him, so it is no longer available unless he changes his mind.

You definitely have a problem, that bike is super screwed. I would have bought it.

Mr. 66 07-23-21 04:32 PM

From the Sharing Wheels Co-op I was able to pick up an as-is PX 10. More of a frame purchase given the state of things. It appears that the original sewups were swapped for Mavic 27"s, that a bummer but in the stash I have the makings of an original wheelset match from the rescent PR 10 build. Needs derailleurs, new bars and levers, maybe a new headset.

As found from Marketplace ad. Both were free! Gents bike is missing the seat. Don’t know if the seatpost is stuck on either. They’ll get a cleaning and service and moved along to new home. I would spring for new cable housing if I could find the striated/grooved type but not losing sleep over it.

The missing Troxel saddle adds value. If you were to toss the other Troxel, you would double the value.:p

You can't save them all...what is that? A Schwinn Traveler?

M900 XTR. Might use it on my Wicked Fat Chance project, but I’d need to make an adapter as this is a monster 34.9 clamp, the Fat is a 28.6…

This Diamondback has some upgrades too, that Deore XT definitely did not come stock. I think I had a 94 Apex with the same paint job.
I have the same crankset on one of my bikes but I'm afraid to abuse it.
Replacements for the outer chainring are expensive/rare on eBay!

rustystrings61

What differentiated the Sirrus and Allez during this era? I know in the later years, the Sirrus became a hybrid but the Sirrus looks pretty sporty here.
Was there more tire clearance?

and oof on the Schwinn, looks like it needs to be completely submerged in Evapo-Rust!
