I don't know if that's just "555" or "555T" but my Raleigh tourer is 555T which is just a butted cro-mo tubing made my reynolds. It's pretty light for a touring bike. I guess it would be a more economical option then a bike built for touring out of 531? Not sure but that's what I have to offer!
That does say "design and engineered by Raleigh" so maybe it's a copy of the Reynolds? Sorry I don't have more to say.

As a n00b, I really don't know if this is a potentially good bike but my quick research indicates that Follis is at least more unusual than Peugeot, Motobecane, or Gitane, and a mixte perhaps even more so...
I would pursue it but am looking for a fun mixte for college-bound daughter, maybe with a little work, not a real project.
Anyone who's knowledgeable please let me know if this is in any way cool or interesting.

Please understand that you won't be able to ride this bike home. It needs work on both brakes. If you are mechanically inclined, you can tighten the front brake line and ride it home. The best value on this bike would be the 2 quick release rims and the derailler. The derailler works fine. If you don't have enough room in your vehicle, you can pay $40, remove the parts you want, and have fun

Frame is about 51-52 cm so good if you wanted to go Fixed Gear route.
Cash only. It's missing front shifter cable line. Also, front crank has only one set of teeth, not 2 so you get only 5 speeds, not 10.

Pedals have foot restraints that prevent slippage, but easily come out in an emergency. Rides great, but it is a little dusty from sitting in storage for many years. Chicago Al, there's nothing unusual about that Follis except the name. It looks like it's about as good as a Peugeot UO-18 which it mimics. At $40, it's a good value and worth buying, if you're willing to put in the required work and if the bike suits your needs. What do you want to do with the bike?

The bike is in very good condition without dents and straight. The paint is in good shape but does show some scratches, some of which have been touched up. This is one of the last steel designs from Merckx and I believe this bike is from the mid 90's. The serial number reads as follows: H G 6459 "

This is a vintage touring/commuter bike made by Dawes of England. It was considered a bench mark for Touring bikes at the time.
It is a 57cm frame (stand over size is 33 1/2 inches ). It has the original leather saddle, Campagnolo shifters, Campagnolo front derailleur, Sachs-Huret rear derailleur, and Weinman center pull brakes.
The bike is in good condition with scuffs and scratches to the frame but mechanically is in really good shape.
It has fairly new tires and new wrap on handle bars.
